Two keepers?

I stalked OFAS hard a few weeks ago and found these (as always, click on the thumbnails for more expansive views):



I wanted them because they are gray with contrasting ribbons. I got what I thought was a pretty good deal on them, though you can never tell.

I discussed the mothing with the seller who said little about it. Turns out the Stetson has some mothing, but nothing I can't live with.

At any rate, here they are, up first the Melton "Ten":

I notice the Stetson is a little lighter and softer than the Melton. Both hats are in good shape baring the distortion from storage and the light mothing on the Stetson. I tried to get some pics of that mothing, but couldn't get anything demonstrable. Other than that, there are no holes, wind trolleys are intact, sweats are immaculate, ribbons are flawless.

The Melton appears to have some discoloration on the ribbon binding the edge, most likely just dirt. I'd like suggestions on how to clean that.

The Stetson is also a 7 1/4 which is a tad big for me. I have it padded with a strip of foam around 3/4 the circumference under the sweat and it fits well but it does buckle the sweatband a bit. Certainly wearable.

And this is another illustration of the fact that anybody with access to steam can crease a hat.

So, how'd I do? Action shots when I get a chance.

I got this at an antique/ consignment store in Halifax, Nova Scotia for eighteen bucks. It's a borsalino, probably the earliest I own.

Damn.

I mean just, damn.

Some of you folks snag the sweetest deals. I shall go away and mope a bit until I can play with my new, old hats.

Nice hats, Ugarte, and a good job creasing them.

I've been hesitant to use steam. I find that spritzing them with water, shaping and allowing to dry works well for me.

Thanks Alan. I think spritzing them with some moisture and steaming do pretty much the same thing. It's just that I'm impatient and the steam is a lot faster.

For example, I'm already thinking of recreasing the Melton with a teardrop or a "C".

Just scored this Stetson on epay - it has a few splatters of something on it but still beautiful:

Suppose to be bought in 1909 - the "Grand Prize 1900 Paris" suggests this could be true. Also has the original Stetson tag under the sweatband with a reordering tag and a price tag that looks like it has $3.50 on it.

I have a separate post asking for any information on this hat as I've never seen another Stetson this old. I have seen a Royal Derby but none like this. Thanks for looking.

Mark -- great lids! I especially like the Melton 10. The stitching suggests that the edge binding may be wider on the bottom of the brim than on the top -- is this true?

New Akubra Stylemaster

This is my first attempt at taking my own pictures and at posting them here, so hopefully it works. This is me and my new Stylemaster. I am interested in opinions from anyone kind enough to comment about the fit and style of this hat for me. This is the first sized hat I've purchased. I used a couple of pieces of felt in the front and back to snug the hat up and now it feels pretty good. Thanks, Bob.

My photography skills leave much to be desired, but here are the two hats I got.. one brand new, the other "like-new" .. I had the hatter re-block them with a "gambler" brim, which is more to my liking than the Cattleman that they come with..

The photo's don't do justice to the texture and feel of the felt, but you get the idea.

Here is a picture I took of the tags under the liner. Does anyone recognize the logo on the tag? It says (maybe) 'H D Co.'. You can see a union tag. There's also a price tag of $5. Any possible date on this? It seems fairly early to me.
