    BATTER UP!

There may be some juicing up the ball, and I think in general players are bigger and stronger than they've ever been, which helps the power game, but the biggest change is simply the approach. It's not that batted balls are simply traveling farther than they used to, but players are actively...

    The "Annoying Phrase" Thread

I love the "up and coming neighborhood" line. It basically means the neighborhood is at rock bottom and has nowhere else to go. But the one that gets me the most is this trend for "tiny houses". You live in a camper. Which is cool, everybody gotta be somewhere, and some of them are quite...

So trivial, yet it really ticks you off.

or That's not exactly true. Here in Texas, we recognize that ours is by far the best...everyone else is competing or 2nd place, but we also enjoy a plate of Carolina pulled pork or Memphis ribs when we want something exotic. Not sure the point of "Kansas City style", though...

My comments weren't a critique, just additional information and discussion. Please don't read too much into it. I too am a fan of old Marantz gear, and old 70s gear in general. As I posted earlier, one of my favorites is my 2230 from 1972. And I agree that sound is in the ear of beholder...

A wealth of knowledge, as usual. Interestingly, every time I have a receiver or amp opened up trying to fix something, and I realize I did something stupid, I think of you standing over my shoulder and slapping me upside the head..."blow up the whole neighborhood, why dontcha!"

I use a regular old drip coffee maker for large production runs and when I'm needing a full pot. I buy the local grocery store brand beans whole and grind them in the store. I like it just fine. For my café Cubano, I use a traditional moka pot and a Cuban coffee brand. I'm partial to Café La...

Magneplanar speakers and electrostatic speakers are two different animals. They are similar looking, but work on two different principles, mainly that electrostats don't use magnets and they rely on secondary power supply to step up extremely high voltages to work. The 1120 is an awfully...

    BATTER UP!

I know many kids who are burned out on baseball by the time they are about 12, but their parents say "I've spent way too much on this for you to quit now..." So they trudge on in misery. And they play a lot more than we did back in the day. I grew up in Florida, where we played baseball...

    BATTER UP!

The change came when parents started shelling out thousands (in some cases tens of thousands) of dollars for little Johnny to play every year as soon as he turns 4 years old. One season of travel ball nowadays costs more than my entire college education did, even when you factor in inflation...

Using weasel words is what separates us from the animals. Except the weasel.

    The "Annoying Phrase" Thread

"Next" and "going forward" mean two completely different things. "Next" is a subsequent step in a process. "Going forward" refers to a change in a process. I guess you could say "in the future" rather than "going forward", but I personally don't get why one is more annoying than the other...

I agree about 70s hi-fi equipment. It was the perfect combination of style and substance. I have a couple of early 70s receivers that I've reconditioned, a Sansui 8080 and a Marantz 2230. The 2230 is sort of the entry into their top-end stuff at the time, and it doesn't have as much power as...

So trivial, yet it really ticks you off.

Working in the oil patch, we'll occasionally run across an old piece of steel pipe or valve or flange that was made in Germany in the 1930s that is stamped with a swastika or other Nazi symbols. It's sobering. Such pieces are highly collectible, though they don't interest me at all.

Genuine synthetic leather! Along those same lines are people who list everything as "vintage". One of my more recent hobbies has been trying to get into old hi-fi equipment and trying my hand at electronics repair. I'll search eBay or Craigslist for old turntables or amplifiers or what have...

    BATTER UP!

I know what you mean. I played for years with many guys who ended up playing college or pro ball, and several who ended up Major League players, stars even. I was a pretty good player, played in college and had some interest from pro scouts (though their advice was "get your education, son")...

    BATTER UP!

Sounds like the same parents, different sport. I grew up in Florida and never saw snow until I was 50 years old, so never played hockey. It was one of those strange sports you read about in Sports Illustrated that they played off on Mars or somewhere. I think I would have liked it though, had...

    BATTER UP!

We affectionately, and sarcastically, refer to those as the “rainbow gut” or the “tequila sunrise”. They are, in my never so humble opinion, the single ugliest piece of cloth ever worn by a member of the human species. The current Astros uniforms are fine and dandy, and the navy and orange is...

    BATTER UP!

Definitely different than here in Texas. Little Leagues are dying. There are kids passing up playing on the high school team because it interferes with their travel ball team schedule, and because they claim only the travel ball rejects have to resort to playing in high school. Of course, most...

    BATTER UP!

This is so true. Everyone thinks their kid is the next superstar, if only they paid enough money for lessons, and $500 gloves, and the dreaded “travel ball”. The reality is, few of those kids are even good enough to play high school baseball, let alone college or professionally. And what’s worse...

DEATHS ; Notable Passings; The Thread to Pay Last Respects

Notorious former Major League pitcher and baseball iconoclast Jim Bouton has died at the age of 80. While enjoying some success early in his career with the New York Yankees, it is Ball Four, his memoir of the the 1969 season for which he was immortalized. Ball Four was unlike any sports book...
