So trivial, yet it really ticks you off.

Exactly. What's the point of being in a club if you can't act all smug about it.

Oh people make assumptions about me all the time, assume my political thoughts, financial situation, family status, etc. These days I routinely get asked out of the blue how many grandchildren I have (for the record, I married later in life than most folks, and don't have any children at all...

For the record....just because I live in Texas, drive a pickup, own a tractor and occasionally wear cowboy boots does not mean I'm part of a larger group of likeminded, foul, incessantly annoying simpletons...like, say Dallas Cowboy fans...

I'm not suggesting that we should tolerate tribalism, or sexual assault for that matter, only pointing out that it is not a new phenomenon nor a creation of modern technology.

Tribalism is as ancient as human existence. In an evolutionary sense, it's hardwired into our DNA. Being able to tell friend from foe, quickly, was a necessity for survival, so we have developed this instinct to trust and align with others who are familiar to us and avoid and distrust those...

This is really what I was interested in. I interpreted (incorrectly) your objection to "socialized medicine" to be the "social" aspect of it, ie that Person A ultimately subsidizes Person B's healthcare. I think for many, that *is* their main objection, at least on the face. I agree that...

Freeloaders have always been, and will always be, and issue in society, be it healthcare or otherwise. Some people are simply going to take without contributing back. So how do we deal with them? In the US, we've traditionally decided not to...that it's simply the "cost of doing business"...

I think that *was* one of the underlying arguments for the ACA...that everyone should put at least *something* in the kitty. So If I understand your position, you don't oppose the "socialized" nature of healthcare so much as "government-run" healthcare? Do you think that insurance companies...

So trivial, yet it really ticks you off.

We have socialized medicine here in the US...it's called insurance. Few people can afford to pay for their own healthcare out of pocket, so we pool our resources and draw out of the global fund as necessary. What you object to, I assume, is being forced to join said pool, government run...

My standard reply to everything from politics to the pitch clock is "you don't really want to know what I think".

The rims weren't always a standard orange color, the early ones were wrought iron, and typically black. But I think by the 1930s, and the standardization of the backboard, they were all orange for higher visibility.

I once heard a comedian's routine where he said he like to write "hello Vincent" in soap on the mirror of hotel bathrooms. When the shower fogged up the room, the writing would appear on the mirror. Now chances are, the next guy to rent the room is not named "Vincent". But if he is...

    Explain the 3-Sphere to me.

This is a common misunderstanding of the big bang theory. It does not suggest there was "nothing", and does not attempt to explain what was there prior to the big bang. The big bang only explains why the universe *looks* the way it does to us. It's not as if the universe was created from some...

DEATHS ; Notable Passings; The Thread to Pay Last Respects

Many Dodger fans refer to him as the "worst big-game pitcher ever". Newcombe famously performed poorly in all of his post season appearances, including being 0-4 with an 8.59 ERA in five World Series starts, and being on the mound with a 3-run lead in the 9th in the '51 playoff game with the...

If you could choose, what city would you like to see crushed by a giant monster?

At least you came to the right place for that. Hope all is on the up with your treatment That’s the smell of money. Just give me fair warning before you send in the monster.

I once had an old Datsun station wagon. It was generally filled with sand and smelled like fishing tackle, but it could go anywhere those jacked up trucks can go. I actually kind of miss it.

Not just in your corner of the world, but everywhere. The environment is orders of magnitude better than it was 40 years ago. Environmental regulation works. There's an economic cost to it, sure, but it works.

My favorite pair of jeans have a big tear around the knee from when I got them caught taking the tractor off of the trailer. I still wear them. Mrs. Hawk hates them. I tell her that people pay hundreds of dollars for jeans that look like these off the rack, and that mine are “authentic”. She...
