Vintage Things That Have Disappeared In Your Lifetime?

Very much so in the South. Debutante balls, cotillions, and in local Hispanic communities the "quinceanera" are still very common.

Vintage Things That Have Disappeared In Your Lifetime?

Ethnic social clubs were very common in the Era, particularly in cities with large immigrant populations. Growing up in Tampa there were still the old Centro Espanol, L'Unione Italiana, and Centro Asturiano. These clubs not only served as social centers for their particular ethnicities, but...

Vintage Things That Have Disappeared In Your Lifetime?

There are still "private club" drinking establishments here in Texas, and they are almost always in an otherwise dry county or dry city. They were originally a way for private organizations, lodges, VFW halls, etc, from getting around the fact that selling alcohol was illegal in that particular...

    Terms Which Have Disappeared

That's the only way I've ever heard it pronounced. Of course, the only people I've ever heard say it are from "up there".

Bluetooth speaker for a beach vacation

I have a UE Boom and it's great. Don't know if it's waterproof though. I use it around the pool and fishing though, never had a problem. Of course, I never dropped it in the water either. But it's a great little speaker.

You know you are getting old when:

I promised myself many years ago that I would never be the guy who pretends he has more hair than he actually does. In my teens and 20s, I had a beautiful head of thick, wavy hair, the girls used to love to run their hands through it and tell me they wish they had hair like this. It's gone...

You know you are getting old when:

I have lot of apps, and I know FB is "Facebook", I *think* IG is "Instagram" (though I've never actually seen it), but I have no earthly idea what Strava is. Never even heard of it. I have apps to watch baseball games, control my thermostat and order Whataburger. You know...the things that...

    Terms Which Have Disappeared

I know and work with many Newfies, and I've never had any trouble understanding them, drinking or otherwise. In fact, I find their accents rather mild for Canadians. The thick Calgary accent is much more difficult to understand, IMO. The hardest English accent for me to understand is...

DEATHS ; Notable Passings; The Thread to Pay Last Respects

In addition to being a noted hat wearer and well-dressed gentleman, Redbone was quite the character. He had a wry and eccentric sense of humor about him, and his voice was described as sounding like a "drunken trombone". He claimed to be 127 years old, but it's pretty well established that he...

    50s Communities?

I know several people who have a hydraulic lift in their garage. They can be had for about $1,500 new, even less used, I'd guess. Not much in the big scheme if you're a real car enthusiast.

    Terms Which Have Disappeared

"Mess Hall" is still used in all the oil field work camps. You will also occasionally hear it called the "canteen".

So trivial, yet it really ticks you off.

We don't have much of a public transportation system here in Houston because apparently it smacks of socialism. Which is more or less defined around as two people within shouting distance of each other.

    What's For Breakfast...

Nothing wrong with eating turkey. It's good for you. It's just not bacon.

    What's For Breakfast...

“Turkey bacon” is like “vegetable salmon” or “non-alcoholic vodka”. It doesn’t even make sense.

    What's For Breakfast...

So today is Cinco de Mayo. Mrs. Hawk and I went down to a local Mexican place, which has a brunch, but we ordered off the menu. Migas, beef empanadas, and spicy pork tacos with pickled onions. Black beans and some spicy potato things on the side. And guacamole because...well, fresh guacamole is...

    Notre Dame Cathedral

What I mean is, what company underwrites a policy on a world heritage site like that? What would said policy look like? How much are the premiums? Not doubting, just curious about how that works on something for which the historical and cultural value cannot be measured and far exceeds any...

    Notre Dame Cathedral

A side anecdote on ownership of historic places: not nearly as old as Notre Dame, but I once did some work at a refinery next door to the Mision San Francisco de la Espada in San Antonio, built in 1690. We had to do excavation on the other side of the fence on mission land, which required all...

    Notre Dame Cathedral

I was just going to post something like this. In 200 years, people will be talking about the 21st century fire, perhaps it’s even just a footnote.

    Notre Dame Cathedral

I saw something this morning saying that over 400 million euros of private money has already been pledged to a rebuild. Of course that’s just pledged, we’ll see how much actually arrives. But it’s a good sign that money will not be an issue. And who insures such a thing? I’m assuming the...

"Vintage" Illnesses aka "I'm Old Fashioned whines for a moment".

Not sure how I missed this thread back in the day, but... I had Scarlett Fever as a child. I sort of remember it. Also had chicken pox when I was about 7, which means I got shingles a few years ago. I wouldn't wish that on my worst enemy. As for immunizations, I had the standard lot back...
