I do not loathe the dentist, as I've not had the bad experiences. I'm 53 years old and have never had a cavity (knock on wood). I had my wisdom teeth out, which is when I discovered how great codeine is (does it take away the pain? Nope, but you don't care...stab you in the eye with a fork...
My dad was a baseball player, and played in the Army, including at Ft. Campbell while he was with the 101st. He said baseball in the service was a BIG deal. He was a pitcher, and a darn good one, so there was a certain celebrity that came with that among the fellas, and especially among the...
If anyone gets the chance, I recommend Aaron’s biography, “I Had a Hammer”. There are some very uncomfortable, but real and honest, passages. Aaron was very private and unassuming, never grabbing the mic or the spotlight. Yet it found him. The days leading up to his breaking the HR record had...
Baseball legend Henry Aaron has died at aged 86. My childhood and the foundation of my baseball soul is officially gone. This one hurts like no other for me.
Rest In Peace, Hammer...
I have a U-Turn Orbit turntable with an Ortofon 2M Blue cartridge. It is what I'd call "entry level audiophile" quality. It's better than budget turntables and cartridges, but it's certainly not top of the heap or anything. The 2M Blue is a solid mid-level moving magnet cartridge. I run that...
There are a number of manufacturers who produce quality turntables for a reasonable price. The aforementioned Pro-Ject is one, as is Rega, Thorens, and Music Hall. I have a U-turn, made here in the good old US of A. Even the old standards by Technics and Audio-Technica are decent. You could...
Actress Dawn Wells, famous for playing Mary Ann Summers on Gilligan's Island, died today from complications of COVID-19. She was 82. This leaves Tina Louise, who played Ginger, as the last surviving cast member from the show. In the age old question for boys of my generation..."Ginger or Mary...
Not a bad suggestion. We go back and forth with the space theme, despite being founded at the location because of the deep water turning basin for ships. And the official emblem of the city is a steam locomotive. A bit of an identity crisis.
I suppose “Houstonian” is better than “Houstonite”. The latter sounds like some exotic crystal used to power your spaceship.
And speaking of demonyms...I’ve lived most of my adult life in Houston, but I was born and raised in Tampa, Florida. And despite the young transplants’ best efforts to...
Working at Big Oil Company, I also take a lot of notes, pages and pages per day. However, we have not only been discouraged from handwriting them, we have been told it may reflect negatively in our performance evaluation, and it will greatly reduce our ability to get promoted. They want notes...
Man, hard to pick just one. So many great blues pickers, from the early days, Delta, Chicago, Texas...all the way up to the British Invasion rock and roll and more modern players. I'd say the best are the ones with the distinctive sound...who you immediately recognize just from the tone of the...
Nokona likes to market itself as the only American made baseball glove, but that's simply untrue. There are lots of American made gloves on the market. I've owned several by Glovesmith, made in Missouri, just like the higher end Rawlings still are. I recommend them highly. There is a company...
I use a Bialetti mokka pot for making Cuban coffee and cortadito. It works great, no metallic taste, and is easy to clean. As for the coffee I use, I like Cafe La Llave espresso. Cafe Bustelo is another popular brand. The right size grind is definitely a key.
Popular athlete/entertainer Fred “Curly” Neal, legendary performer with the Harlem Globetrotters has died at the age of 77. Neal’s infectious smile and basketball skill entertained millions for over two decades...
