So trivial, yet it really ticks you off.

Last time I encountered the Girl Scouts while leaving the supermarket, the girl told me they were $5/box, but...she could let me have four boxes for $20. So I bought four boxes. I can smell a deal from a mile away.

So trivial, yet it really ticks you off.

As I watched Katie Ledecky smoke the field in the 1500m the other night, I thought about what an exhausting race that has to be. I was on the swim team in high school, but never swam anything of that distance. I’d imagine most of those out there would struggle to make one length, let alone 15...

Get a barn cat. Problem solved.

I just don’t understand why people get so churned up over the Cleveland club changing their nickname. I wouldn’t have chosen “Guardians”, but literally couldn’t care less that they changed it. Maybe we should ask Rocky Colavito what he thinks.

    School Sandwiches

I don't remember any particular sandwich from my school boy days...just your run of the mill PB&J and liverwurst. I once had a neighbor named Otto who ate lard sandwiches...just a big slice of cold lard between two pieces of plain, dry bread. And no SPAM for me. I'd rather eat dirt. As for...

    Terms Which Have Disappeared

Late to the party...as usual...but I've never in my life seen anyone wear "rubbas" or "rain boots" or whatever the locals call them. I know what they are, of course, but never have seen anyone wearing them. And it's not due to lack of rain, I've always lived in locations where we got more...

Vintage things that have REAPPEARED in your lifetime?

While I agree with you that painting over original stained wood work is a crime, and all white walls/cabinets don't look "clean and fresh" to me, they look tired and boring, I have to say that I do NOT like the look of the room they left alone. All of that mural-like inlay is way too busy and a...

Vintage things that have REAPPEARED in your lifetime?

I have to admit I enjoy watching some of those shows, but basically only the ones you describe about trying to preserve the original architecture and details as much as possible. One of those is shot a little down south of me in Galveston, TX, and they focus quite a bit on the Victorian homes...

I'm afraid you're probably correct. A few of the politically-appointed board members resigned, but I don't expect any meaningful reform. A similar, though less drastic, event happened in 2011, and the same conversations were had. Nothing changed. I don't expect it to this time either. Our...

DEATHS ; Notable Passings; The Thread to Pay Last Respects

American actor Yaphet Kotto has died at age 81. Kotto was a prolific character actor for several decades, and a bit of a "that guy", an actor you certainly recognize even if you don't remember his name. Probably most noted for his role as James Bond villain Mr. Big in "Live and Let Die" and as...

Not healthcare related, but...I'm guessing you heard about our self-inflicted mess with our whacked electricity grid and the winter storm we went through down here in Texas a few weeks ago. It exposed all manner of political cronyism, corporate greed and gouging of the populace for what should...

When understanding a design brings a new appreciation

My grandmother's house had what I guess was a sort of a root cabinet. It was a separate little cabinet screened on three sides, but it didn't open to the outside. There was no air conditioning in Florida in those days, but I guess just having the air circulation helped keep things for a few...

DEATHS ; Notable Passings; The Thread to Pay Last Respects

Hagler wasn’t the only one who thought he won that fight. One of the judges admitted that he’d incorrectly scored Leonard with two rounds that should have gone to Hagler, though he says it would not have changed the outcome. Hagler claims that Leonard even told him after the last bell “you beat...

DEATHS ; Notable Passings; The Thread to Pay Last Respects

Don’t know if there are any boxing fans here, but one the greats, “Marvelous” Marvin Hagler died today at aged 66. Hagler was one of the all-time great middleweight champions, and the opening round of his 1985 title bout with Thomas Hearns is widely regarded as the greatest single round in...

Vintage Things That Will NOT Disappear In Your Lifetime

It’s funny, one of the first things to shock non-Americans when they arrive here is the bathroom. First, realizing just how public public restrooms are. Second is the lack of the bidet or similar. “It’s bad enough I can’t get any privacy, but how am I supposed to...you know...forget it, I...

    BATTER UP!

Is “a face like a catcher” like having a “face made for radio”? Some of the all time great backstops have a spot on the All Ugly team...Yogi, Joe Torre, Ernie Lombardi... I’ve caught my whole life. It’s catching up to me too.

    BATTER UP!

I remember that was a huge jump for me as well. We didn't have intermediate level fields or anything so went straight from a Little League field to a full size field. Little League considered me a "13 year old", though I had just turned 12 a few weeks earlier. It was an enormous leap to 90-ft...

When understanding a design brings a new appreciation

There is a gentleman like that here in town. He opens his shop on days he feels like it, closes when he feels like it, hasn’t answered his phone in 40 years, and will get to your repair when he gets to it. But he is the go to guy for any serious watch repair. He’s told me more than once he’s...

When understanding a design brings a new appreciation

As a pocket watch carrier myself, I appreciate the pocket, though I suspect that it's often included just for aesthetics, not functionality these days. It's simply become part of the design. And now that you mention it, I don't believe I've ever seen that pocket on the left.

    Dentist Woes!

I was also in college when I had my wisdom teeth removed (come to think of it, I was in college when I had my appendix removed as well...I sorta broke down all at once, I guess), and had to go take a stratigraphy exam later that evening, while on the codeine. I still don't remember a word of...
