In a VERY expensive restaurant here in São Paulo (a fashion place, must i say), people think it's "cool" go dinner in jeans, t-shirts, etc. This would demonstrate to others that the restaurant would be familiar to you, not needing "special clothes".
Great videos and interviews; congratulations, Miss Jo!
Living in the time and the way you want to live is something about liberty. Anybody can decide what and how want to live. Great!
Agree with this, too! And remember me Gilespie.
I really apreciate Dizzy Gilespie as a trumpet player (magnificient technics, even if I do not find lots of music in his playing... From people who play high notes I prefer, as musicians, Cottie Williams, Charlie Shavers and a few others). But...
We have this here in Brazil too. As it would be "wrong" to make a living with music - a kind of sacrilege. A very wrong argument, I think. Shakespeare was thinking about money and public when he wrote his plays. Ever Armstrong needed to pay his bills. The origin about the "elitism" of bebop? I...
I believe that so many think about 30s-40s as the apex of popular music because in any other era there was something so strange. Refinated, complex music, made for $$$. And getting so huge sucess. Elements that usually don't walk together. Stan Kenton being "popular", for example - and this...
I never tought hats for films were just period designs, and cine studios bought them in large amounts to have in stock... I was absolutely wrong, after reading this thread.
Started and finished yesterday "South of no North", by Charles Bukowski. An intriguing book. A strange mixture of bas-fond language and a tender, warm, sometimes lyrical look over loosers.
Anyone here like his literature?
Hum! Of course, is your opinion. But are you sure that aren't you putting to many musicians in the same basket? :eusa_doh:
Duke Ellington is lame? And what Ellington? From Cotton Club or at Newport, in 60s (or 70s)? Or Basie in late 50s don't have vitality?
Maybe Dorsey with "I'm...
Oscar Niemeyer is, certainly, a tough guy! 102 y.o. isn't something to everybody! And now he is 103.
He has some very distinct buildings. But not Brasilia. That city is ugly and against humans.
His best work is in 40s and 50s, usually here in São Paulo, and a few more in Rio de Janeiro...
Funny to read this old thread - because this is familiar to me. Cury hat factory is in Limeira, a small town around 6 miles from my parents's home (in Americana - maybe some US folks have heard about. Founded by US confederates). The two big hat factories in Brazil are Cury and Prada (now...
Biggest problem with Kyser band is that it is easy listened as a "mickey-mouse band" (corny), depending of the records you're listening.
"Gimmick" is a term almost impossible to translate to me - but got the meaning.
Martin
But hten we would be talking about different kinds of music, Jack.
Kyser is a good sweet orchertra - that used to play bad music, too. At least this is what I think about after listening some records.
Spyke Jones is something completely different! Almost a mistery how they could make...
Just got an enormous amount of sheet music that belonged to my grandfather... Aside piano, his instrument was tenor banjo, and was a big fan of Harry Reser since he was a teenager (he ever tried to runaway to USA twice because music! But happilly my great-grandefather cought him, once when he...
Love classical music... Instrumental and operistic. Like so many, I prefer romantic period composers, aside some modern like Debussy, Satie, Rachmaninoff (OK, his style is XIXth Century - but have some XXth Century feeling), Richard Strauss, etc.
And about conductors? My preferred are Hermann...
Maybe because in really good orchestras the musicians have pleasure about playing. I really couldn't see somebody been proud about producing Kaye's music. Note by note, Kaye is correct - but there is no "soul". (remember me an old 78 from Jose Iturbi trying to play boogie-woogie. Just...
The biggest problem with facebook are those folks that just want the biggest number of "friends" - but don't make any effort to talk, exchange ideas, etc. With these, the "ignore" is really the best button in world!
Some films make their luxuries the "stars" of themselves... Just forgeting that there are so many other factors about be a film "good" ou "bad". A big mistake. "Cleopatra" with Liz Taylor, I think, happened the same. It's not a bad movie - but it wasn't a marvelous one, either.
Agree with you about Heaven's Gate. Of course it isn't a masterpiece, but I like it, too - but it's clear that it would never pay itself.
Maybe the trouble was the studio wanting to make something "special" and "important". Put a lot of money in it and just got a movie.
