Ask a question, get an answer

Normally I don't advise people to not buy something, but I'd make an exception in the case of that Borso. $450 will get you a custom beaver felt hat. Don't spend it on a cheaply made Borso. They couldn't even be bothered to tack the ribbon correctly on the one they shot for that photo.

    Hats on TV

Adam Savage, formerly of Mythbusters, wearing a nifty western fedora. I wonder where he's getting his hats....I know his Man With No Name hat, which showed up frequently on Mythbusters, was from Knudsen hats here in the bay. And his Indy hat is an Adventurebilt deluxe, so he's familiar with...

    Phoenix Hat Company

Well, apparently they're in fairly wide use by western makers. That thread is a doozy.

    Phoenix Hat Company

Translation is a bit rough, but here's an article from the Air Portugal in-flight magazine, of all places. http://upmagazine-tap.com/en/pt_artigos/hats-off-to-sao-joao/ Nuno Figueiredo warns us about the sweet, sickly smell of animal fur, and forges ahead, opening the doors of the Cortadoria...

    Phoenix Hat Company

Well, we have to do some transitive logic, but Fepsa makes felts for Optimo, and Optimo's standard felt line (as of a few years ago anyway, earlier hats were not all beaver) is 100% beaver. For instance, IIRC, my Dillinger is would be a beaver blend.

Decade that was the peak of hat quality?

Well, there are objective things we can point to. Consider the sweatband. Early Stetsons (per Matt Deckard's Instagram captions) used 2" wide cuts of sheepskin leather, later hats used 1 1/2" cowhide leather. Hence, the sweatband on my 100+ year old Stetson western is still supple, while the...

    Pre 1940s Stetson Westerns

Tweaked the crease a bit on this one to try and reign in some of that 7" crown. Photo homage to @Short Balding Guy

What Hat Are You Wearing Today 1?

Well, I tried to wear this one today, but Fort Funston was too windy to risk a 100+ year old Stetson, so it stayed in the car.

    Optimo south side mobsters

Great collection! One day I may talk myself into buying a second Optimo. Probably will have to win the lotto first! But I'm anxious to see how the not-Lloyd Wright porker turns out! enjoy those fantastic hats!

    Rabbits and Beavers

In Mr. Bowers' Winchester tour video he asks Richard Beene (who is giving him the tour) if the fur comes in from Europe, yes seems to be the answer.

What Hat Are You Wearing Today 1?

I was there in April and bought the last size 7. They can't get any more of them from Stetson. I think there's one or two left in the store.

    Buying a hat in Italy

Also, Borsalino has gone bankrupt. Perhaps @Daniele Tanto will chime in? The only "insight" I can offer, is that I didn't see many hats when Conan did his show there. :p:D

Nice! The stitching is a great detail. Great profile and proportions on this one.

HNC Hatworks (formerly known as Agnoulita Hats)

As far as the brim, something I've been meaning to invest in for myself, would be a brim press. Depending on how handy one is with some basic woodworking, this may be able to be DIYed. There are several variations on the theme available online, including one sold from Stratton hats...

Ask a question, get an answer

eBay is rife with gently used westerns. My suggestion is to keep with Resistol. There are a lot of 60's Resistols that are quite nice hats, that don't have the brand appeal as Stetsons, which tend to be priced higher. $100 will almost certainly get you a decent fur felt western. It may take a...

Ask a question, get an answer

The Sonora is indeed listed as "4x wool" in the Resistol catalogue. There are also some hats listed simply as 4x. Are they different? Who knows. Hatco doesn't disclose their fur blends. However, that hat is indeed wool in some part The other fur felt hats seem to start at 6x for Resistol and 5x...

IMHO, if you're sinking money into a custom, go for beaver.

    Looking for hat information?

Impossible to say based on that photo, but if they're in Australia,it is probably an Akubra. https://akubra.com.au/products/squatter
