whats the name/type of this hat?

I tend to think our modern perception of where the line for how stiff westerns ought to be is thrown off by modern hats. Earlier open crown westerns would have been appreciably softer, even as they would have been relatively more stiff than the soft felt dress hats at the time. I leaned toward...

whats the name/type of this hat?

No specific name other than western with a pencil curl brim. Closest "off the rack" hat would be Stetson's West Bound B http://www.stetson.com/store/west-bound-b-5.html Johnny's might be vintage because it's Johnny, but I suspect that's a custom job. Here's two examples, one vintage, one...

    I love the Fed IV!!

Another vote for Carbon over moonstone. But Scotty offers sage advice....color selection does ultimately come down to the individual.

Thanks, gents. I probably should have remembered that one. I did know of Standard and Select Quality on those earlier Stetsons.

    The BORSALINO BROTHERHOOD

Here's a hat I haven't posted since the great Photobucket purge. I'm not sure of the date on this one? Onionskin liner that has a bit of damage and there's one small stain on the brim, but otherwise good condition for a decently vintage Borso. The basting stitches are still present. Color is...

AFAIK, the Excellent Designation for 100% beaver is relatively recent. It is currently true that Excellent is the highest grade. Imperial Hats are often, but not always, long hair finishes. See, Alan's 30's-40's Imperial, for example. Imperial should be higher than Sovereign, which is higher...

Hi Ken, does it say Byer-Rolnick anywhere on the liner or other parts of the hat?

A part of me wonders just how much inherent inconsistency there is in factory hat production and what the "margins of error" are. We are after all, talking about finished goods from natural fibers and leathers. Heck, it might even be the case that our observations of inconsistency reflect how...

Notwithstanding minor production variances, the two sweatbands would theoretically be cut to the same length. However, the heritage grade hats also use a higher grade of leather which hatsdirect markets as "less prone to drying and shrinkage."

    Akubra Campdraft

The Campdraft was originally produced under license as the Stetson Open Road, which is considered a dress western. But they should not be stiff like a western.

Straw, paper straw, can someone break this down for me?

EBay has a healthy supply of stingy brim straws from the 60's that would probably for the bill if you're willing to do a little legwork.

Straw, paper straw, can someone break this down for me?

In the sense that paper straw/shantung will cover your head and keep the sun off you, I'm not sure I could make a convincing argument that natural straw is inherently superior. I've seen some discussion online that high grade natural straws having a tighter weave might lend relatively better UV...

    I love the Fed IV!!

You're looking in the wrong places if you can't find folks posting pictures of their custom Indy hats. Swing by COW. Also, folding the sweatband in half? Never heard that one. IMHO, the eccentricities of the original HJ block can't be matched by the Fed, which is why a lot of folks on COW have...

Agreed. Here's my Penman Pork Pie I posted the other day: open crown height is 5 1/2" creased height is about 3 3/4 from brim to the creased part of the crown. Looks fine for a pork pie, but yes, it's somewhat shallower than a regular fedora. Some of those western telescopes used a decent...

If we are limiting the choices to Christy's or Akubra, in this instance, Akubra is your better bet. If low price is your concern, Akubra is your better bet. If, on the other hand, your budget can stretch a bit higher, and high quality is your concern, I would highly suggest investing in a...
