The source of a good deal of the slang in the 1930s was military stuff from WWI, plus railroad and maritime references. Sometimes though it's a struggle to create language that works for both then and now in equal measure, just like many translators are poets some creative license is required...
It's nearly required that you'll have a clean version of a costume and then one for every significant level of wear and tear established by the story ... not being shot in order means you can only rarely distress a costume as you go. Each of course needs to be a pretty exact duplicate. Then...
The fashion and celebrity bit should increase the Wife Approval Factor of the event ... I see it as having something for everyone. I do believe it is hard to stay nearby without paying a fortune, though there may be a trick or two known by others.
Ha! I still have a hat from City Hatters! Truly, you Aussies have nicer Central Business District renovations than anything we see in most of the US. As long as an area has no alternative to being modernized and re-purposed that technique I saw all over Oz of using the old building as the...
I would say that it utterly relies on the style of the rest of the piece. If you have adequately established a casual storytelling tone in the rest of the narration then it is definitely in style and okay ... but if you only do such things occasionally and the reader has a chance to forget that...
I think you are right. Not sure that it changes anything on the 911 front, however, except maybe that, like with the rear engine, Porsche is indulging in the Franco-Germanic trait of pitching quirkiness as "logic." Driving a 911 is still essential to "getting it" or not. I don't care for rear...
Holy mackerel! Where did this come from??? I can't read the most important names, can you?
Oh, got it now ... Alexey Zakharov
Gorgeous work ... LOT'S of work in that little film.
My feelings exactly. There is a story in the design of many different sorts of machinery, how they can do what they do, that fascinates me. Why the Colt SAA cylinder turns the way it does (it may have been designed to be used left handed, with a saber in the right), why the Porsche ignition...
I too have had to use a gun in defense of others, thank God just the sight of it worked a miracle and send the bad guys on their way leaving the woman who was being assaulted and car-jacked (being beaten out of pure meanness right in my front yard) the only injured person. I had no issues with...
I loved working in comics, really enjoyed moving between what was said and what was shown. When "Stonehenge" starts to play is it a tiny UFO that descends on stage?
It was so elegant and economical before now that bit seems kind of awkward. I'll have to look at it again tomorrow with fresher...
And, ya know, the practice actually counts for something if you're not distracted by too many guns. An old friend of mine, once a Vietnam era Marine sniper and more recently the dude in charge of the international police mission to Iraq, was asked, "how do I improve my shooting?" He wisely...
I can hardly believe that I'm still finding things to fix on the book I'm working on ... but that's what happens when you set something down for awhile. I also discovered some technical details about tanker ships that needed to be corrected.
Here's another irritating bit that research turned...
This place is the way our site was for the first few years. Somehow this wonderful group (vastly larger than the one that came to our forum ever was) has maintained their civility for a long long time. I shouldn't say "somehow" ... I know how: character.
Very good!
I delivered Book One today ... again. It's been edited, then I went through it, then them, then me. We had our contractual spat, which is not over but is over enough for me to stop holding out (and it's good to let them keep working, the more money and time they spend without a...
More eyes never hurts just don't lose your vision of the story based on what anyone (especially "professionals" who aren't going to pay you) says. You are very welcome and super good luck!
You intend to write and you think you're going to "retire"? HA! There's not retirement, just work for a boss you is always looking over your shoulder, nagging, threatening, punishing! Take those vacations now because when you are working for yourself, even just writing for fun, you'll have to...
The Smith K frame, in a 2" to 3" is such an excellent choice. There is no reason I've ever seen to load them with 357, it's really just a waste of powder. .357 rocks with long barrels to the point it's great in a carbine but it's a disorienting and inefficient in a smaller gun. .38 Special...
