I have a Cheyenne in mid-weight HH and have seen the leather that John uses at Goodwear.
The leather is MUCH softer and easier to break in than the chrome tanned (at least Aero's). I believe you are correct that the leather color is a deeper tone, which is probably due to the tanning process.

I like the shearling lined barnstormer, but in the other thread regarding what you would/wouldn't buy again, apba1166 made the statement above. I wasn't aware of any downsides to a shearling lined coat.

In my experience, the B6 is comfortable down to 10 degree F with a light sweater. Anything above freezing and it's a little too warm.
The B3 would be significantly warmer. For me, I like the simple design of the B6 and D1.
If you want durability, maybe a cheyenne or barnstormer in shearling?
