That seller did a great job on the auction photos, the color is more of rich coffee brown in person though. You made the right call, i've had a few sellers mess up measurements recently, myself included. This one was a dead on 22".
Thank you gents, that Howard is more than likely my second oldest hat behind my Dunlap silk bowler. Really spectacular hat.
Mayser, thats a superb melone you posted. I still need to eventually pick up an old austrian melone, everyone i've seen always looks just outstanding in quality.
I lost...
Thats a wonderful Howard, i'm a big fan of that sage/copper mix on older derbies. The brim curl is really interesting on this one, it's a shorter brim with a very flat curls and binding.
Grey with blue undertones. Identical blocking as the black cherry Harrods bowler next to it. I'd wager Dunn and Co. was the manufacturer of Harrods and Herbert Johnson's bowlers as well.
Pretty standard measurements at 1 3/4" brim and 5" crown. It has identical proportions as as the larger riding derby according to the seller. I'd almost think it has to be a riding derby as well but its fairly strange to see a leather sweat on one.
Couldnt resist this unique little Stetson derby with a cork liner. Seller had a few mint condition Stetsons, including a riding derby in a larger size with an identical cork liner.
It is a shame that the art of making those old thin stiff felt derbies just disappeared after a certain point. Bob at Blacksheep Hatworks is doing an amazing job though. He does blind brim stitching for the brim bindings and it looks fantastic. Not too mention he could do it in a variety of...
So yea this is easily one of the most substantial bummers i've had in a long time. JoshBru, it appears your instincts were preternatural.
This auction was an absolute mind****.
This is the hat I thought I won on Ebay, as it was the hat pictured on the auction.
This is the hat they sent...
A large portion of my hats are black, mainly because I collect bowlers. I think that fedoras were generally designed to be a bit more flashy. All the advertising I see for the era all go to lengths to describe the vast array of felt colors available.
I just assume that most hatmakers back then...
Very pleased with this one. Great condition, and an added bonus in that I thought this was going to be identical to another Huckel I used to own thats now in Garretts wonderful collection.
This has a shorter finish and a raw edge brim. Absolutely stunning hat, the leather hatbox it came with...
The finishes they used to be able to achieve really are something to behold. Great looking Huckel, almost looks like a deep emerald green. Its amazing how a ribbon and brim binding can almost trick the eyes a bit.
Wore this newly acquired Scott and Co bowler today, which amazingly enough I...
