That particular hat is about four years old, for about two yeas it was my every day hat, so it saw a lot of use. Standing on the sidelines of the rugby in the rain, that sort of thing. Since then, it has walked the Overland Trail, some of the Larapinta Trail, been ridden hard and put up wet. So...
This was a birthday gift from the lady in the picture. We were in Katoomba for the weekend, so breakfast at the Hattery Cafe and just a bit of a browse around the hats. Well, before you know it I was wearing an Akubra Homburg.
With a willingness to buy me hats for my birthday, it is no...

I was looking through some photos, and decided this one was worthy of the lounge.
Not sure a fedora can get a lot more 'afield' than this. It is on top of Mt Ossa, highest mountain in Tasmania 41°52′15.69″S 146°02′0.04″E
It is my Akubra Stylemaster, which has lived a hard life but has served...
Swaggering
Picked up a Stetson Swagger today in a nice carbon grey with some long light hair running through it and a sewn overwelt. It is an Australian made one marked "John Martin's of South Australia". It looks unworn (I'll change that in a hurry).
It is a nice addition to my small...
$7.95
Picked this one up for $AU7.95 (that's $5.40 for our American readers).
It is
1. My first Stetson
2. My first Beaver felt (xxx)
and
3. My first thin ribbon
It has been significantly nibbled upon by moths (mostly under the brim)
but I quite like it. The worst of the damage is...
shrink to fit
Straight out of the box a 58 fits me well, but then ends up too tight while a size 59 with a couple of strips of paper in the sweat band will over time shrink down nicely. Especialy after a walk in the rain.
I did once find a size 61 'The Arena' which I was able to shrink...
had a couple this week
I've had a couple of people make comments this week.
Firstly a slightly intoxicated woman shouted out "hat man, don't listen to averyone. You've got style you're sexy hat man"
which amused me no end.
Then I was out at yum cha yesterday and a man came up to me to...
we can't have this thread without quoting Atatürk (commander of the Turkish 19th Infantry Division. Faced the ANZACs during the Gallipoli campaign and later first President of Turkey).
XKCD describes itself as
and I concur.
This little gem however, kind of reminded me (in some odd way no one else will understand) of the WTF is with Indy thread of a week or so ago.
I was out today in the rain in my Akubra Flemington. It came down in buckets and I had no problem. A perfectly dry head and the hat still looks like a hat.
I have no idea why the Tilley hats seem to be so popular amongst some members of the lounge. Sure they are probably cheeper than an...
Northeast
Am I?
As an Englishman (whose father has a large dose of a Scots accent, mother has a mix of Oxford and Sheffield) who has lived in Australia for many years I am quite sure that someone from Connecticut would be unlikely to think I was from their home town.
Although, stranger...
I'd guess that this is less about the bash and more about an asymmetrical block. So it would be difficult to turn one into a regular bash or to make a regular hat look like that. Sure, you could bash a hat off centre, but it wouldn't have the same look (although it is hard to tell with an...
Dman,
if you're just after stopping the hole from becoming the whole, then a smear of clear silicone sealant around the hole will do that.
You want to make sure that you don't make it visible through the hole, other than that, pop the bash out then spread a finger full liberally around the...
One method I've seen from the bushies and farmers for their beater hats, is to stitch the hole closed, usually with big leather stitches around the crown.
It's an interesting look,
probably not what you wanted to hear,
but the truth is felt won't patch well, certainly not with holes that big...
