WOW! I hung in for a while but was not even close. Beautiful hat! John

    The Cavanagh Club

Brad, Will it be possible to determine whether the hat had a Cav edge or was trimmed by looking at the edge once I receive it? Thanks! John

    The Cavanagh Club

Thanks Sue. I'm a little deflated as Brad Bowers responded to the ebay thread and noted that the ribbon and sweat were replaced. I never noticed. The good news is that it dates to the 1940s and the felt is probably pretty nice. And there is that great rusty red - burgundy color. John

Ebay Hats: Victories, Defeats, Gripes & Items of Interest

Well no wonder I won it! Education is expensive. On the other hand, I bought it to wear and not as an investment so all is not lost. It's a 1940s Cavanagh felt hat in an unusual color and a large size. I think I'll keep it. John

    The Cavanagh Club

I posted this on the ebay topic but it belongs here as well. My first Cavanagh won on ebay so I don't have it yet. The photos can't be captured from Activa so I'm stuck posting a (long) link - I love this color but it will be interesting to work into an outfit. Thanks for looking. John...

Ebay Hats: Victories, Defeats, Gripes & Items of Interest

In keeping with my obsession about different colored hats, I won this one. It's a Cavanagh. Based on my rudimentary knowledge it looks older but I don't know how old. Are there any guesses from the Cav collectors...

    Roelofs Hats?

Henry H. Roelofs - the first one - died in 1916 in South America. Guyer bought or took over Roelofs before this possibly about 1914. I have no idea where the one year old grandson named after his grandfather fits in to this picture in 1924? Obvously, a son of Henry had a son - was this son...

    Roelofs Hats?

Thanks Mario. It looks like an unreeded sweat in this shot, doesn't it? I guess it's difficult to see. We'll know in about a week. I hate waiting for ebay treasures to be shipped to me! rlk - thanks for the ad! But, again, it's pre-WWI - 1911 in this case. Where are the Roelofs...

    Roelofs Hats?

I am thrilled to death that it is a 1930s era hat but I would be interested to know what characteristics make this a 1930s hat? Yes, it was a wonderful find (wallow away, CRH), but my good fortune had nothing to do with knowledge or skill. I'd like to change that, if I can. Also, all the...

    Classic Hat Makers List

Please add Henry H. Roelofs & Co, Hats, Philadelphia to the list. A competitor of John B. Stetson in the 19th century until he married Stetson's daughter then it gets a little murky. Some indication that the company stopped being Roelofs around 1916? I'm still gathering information and will...

    Roelofs Hats?

Thank you all for the replies. The info. that you found on the internet was pretty much what I found. rlk put the photos that went with the auction up in one of his responses above. I obviously don't have the hat yet. I can't believe this hat would be that old? Before 1916?? The seller...

    Roelofs Hats?

I won a hat made by Henry H. Roelofs Hat Company, Philadelphia. I have found out that either Henry or his father was John B. Stetson's son-in-law. The Roelofs started making hats in the 19th century around the same time as Stetson and they had a factory/store at Brown and 12th Street in...

    Public Enemies

Mann movies aren't blockbusters. "Heat" did even worse than Public Enemies when it was released but made up for it in DVD sales. I am told that for a movie to make money, it must take in twice what is cost. Rumors were that PE cost about 100 mil to make and it's taken in 206 mil domestic and...

    Public Enemies

I found the "Public Enemies" movie to be entertaining. Unfortunately, that's pretty much all I care about anymore. Biographical? Historically accurate? Multi-dimensional characters? No, nope, not even a little bit. Did I enjoy it? Affirmative, you bet, yessiree! That's why I asked Santa...

    What are you wearing today??

Wore this outfit to a party last night. Dark brown window-pane coat, gold shirt and pocket square, teal/dk blue/gold paisley tie, dark blue slacks, S.L. Bird & Sons teal fedora. Wool pants didn't look this shiny in person.

Presence of wind trolley dates a hat?

I know that some of the modern hat makers, like Optimo, will put these on their hats but, in general, is this a dating tool? And, if so, what would the approximate dates be? Thanks! John

Ebay Hats: Victories, Defeats, Gripes & Items of Interest

I came in second but I went a little crazy - way over what I wanted to spend. $338 !!!! Is this an "in the ball park" price for a Cavanagh like this? Thank goodness someone out bid me - my wife would have skinned me alive. Thanks! John
