Just as a heads up: AME is the Navy Enlisted rating for Aviation Structural Mechanic (Safety Equipment). They maintain an aircraft's internal systems (everything from cockpit air conditioning to ejection seats and hydraulic and pneumatic control systems).
Nice jacket at a great price. Congrats!
Looks like a nice, comfortable fitting work-style jacket. A "work" jacket should fit a bit roomier then an MC or A-2 jacket (which were designed to be form-fitting and snug).
Looks like a winner. Congrats!
Not sure when that was made; I have an old W&G catalog from the 1980's and nothing like that is in the catalog. They did do some sample/one-off items and limited editions of certain pieces that are unusual.
NY harbor and the Hudson River have been getting lots of ice; today we have a temp of 3 F (-18 with the wind chill). I wish I had a M-444 or AN-J-4 this morning!
Yes, the FQHH is really softening up in the second, "after", photo.:D
Some report that their FQHH did soften up drastically over time while others say the hide stayed uncomfortably stiff, even after several years. I wonder if it depends on specific batches of FQHH or just the amount of time and...
Ralph Lauren and Buzz Rickson have partnered in creating a very authentic looking A-2 (they retail for $2400 but can be had much cheaper on-line and even on the 'Bay).
Some of the RRL stuff is very cool and (almost) worth the asking prices. Buying one or two items from their vintage clothing...
Pop's Leather (located in Turkey but has an on-line shop) does a lot of custom leather jackets based on Military issue garments (A-2, MA-1, G-1, etc). He will even add an internal pistol holster for flyers that are required to carry a firearm while in their flight togs.
I bet he's done many for...
My US A A-2 (their standard model) was purchased in 2011. The seal HH was thick but not overly stiff (the way I like it). I am 6'1" and hate jackets that are a tad too short so I really like their sizing. I ordered a "tall" which added 1.5" (or was it 2"?) to their standard length.
And I agree...
I like their seal HH. It's quite substantial and appears to be chrome-tanned with a solid topcoat and grain that pops up over time. The workmanship is very good; fit-wise, the sleeves and body were nice and trim. They are probably cut longer (even in "regular" sizing) then other jackets but I am...

For sale on the 'Bay, brand new with tags. Jacket is the rare slim fit, Alpha MA-1 TT, black, in a size 3XL (I wear a 44-46 and this jacket fits me fine, just a bit snug in the chest).
Retail is $150-$200 and my buy-it-now is $99.
Thank you.
