Just wanted to give everyone a heads up that I'm cleaning out the old closets and getting rid of some rarely used jackets; for sale at a buy-it-now price of $249 on the 'Bay is a rare vintage Avirex Air Apaches A-2 in excellent condition, size Large. These jackets are pretty rare in such good...
Rolex Sea-Dweller purchased 6 years ago (absolutely no temptation to buy a new watch). Have owned my Jeep Wrangler for 10 years now (love it). Leather jackets, now that's a whole different story!:D
The squadron patch usually went on the left chest with name tag generally right above it. Some added a group patch on the right chest as well. Check the ELC site and when you click on any of the A-2 jackets there's a good insignia tab where you can add rank/name/squadron/group insignia to your...
Not sure if you meant it as a double entendre, but "took it to another level" could refer to JC's customer service or to the height of the chest pocket. Either way, I'm glad you like your jacket :)
I've read somewhere that the Navy did some very thorough testing of leather types and chose goatskin for their M-422a/G-1 flight jackets because of it's superior qualities. They do last a long time and just seem to look better and better (like this WWII Edmund T. Church M-422a goatskin jacket).
I recognize Richard Cole's signature there inside your jacket; he was Jimmy Doolittle's co-pilot in plane #1 on the famous Doolittle Raid on Japan in 1942. When signing autographs, many of the Raiders add the plane number that they were on for that historic mission (R.E.Cole #1).
Even on this old LL Bean A-2 I bought on the 'Bay (only $50!) the goatskin shows some nice graining and patina. My next bespoke jacket will definitely be goatskin.
You can snag one (in good/excellent condition) with the better-quality one-piece back for around $100. If you find one with the Thinsulate lining then go for it! They are the perfect "beater" jacket for grab-and-go occasions.
I guess BK want to potentially tap into the Joe McCoy/ELMC premier vintage leather jacket marketplace. They are all quite pricey; one deerskin Joe McCoy jacket is selling for 216,000 yen (over 1,200£). Yikes!
I actually bought a blood chit from Avirex and had it sewn onto my QM A-2. The QM jackets were nearly identical to the LL Bean and Eddie Bauer 1980's A-2 jackets. They all had a one-piece back (as did Jake's on TOTGM). I was a big fan of the show so I studied all the details of the TV jacket and...
Long ago I had a "Quartermaster" brand A-2. Mine was dark seal brown goatskin (very lightweight hide) with a lighter brown nylon lining and side hand-warmer pockets....and yeah, I had sewn a Flying Tigers blood chit on the back :-)
Thanks bro! I ordered a LW Raider from Stu as a Christmas present to myself :-)
And now I am trying to wait patiently for it's arrival. A pic or two of your jacket will help with the waiting.
