strong opinion
For my money Mark Strong would make a far more 'authentic' Holmes as I might imagine it, or am I channeling the Jeremy Brett model, which I think we all agree was pretty much the best ever?
a lemon
I recall hearing that apart from the flavour, the idea behind lemon juice on oysters was to see if they were freshly shucked, because they would tense up and move in reaction to the acid......once they were old and tired the juice had no effect....
Mad about the boy
I used to love MAD when I was a kid in the early 60's but it was very much a 50's thing for my money, they started to get tired after a couple of years bashing hippiedom. Dave Berg was always good value though.
NY NY
The Grand Central Oyster bar in New York was great when I slurped a few down with beers there many years ago, which reminds me, anybody actually float the oyster in their beer? It's best done when there's only a decent mouthful left in the glass and MUST be still cold.
OK chaps I've been rereading some old WSM tales of Borneo and what have you...but what may I ask is a "stengah shifter"? Gin Pahit is easily googled but not this item of clothing, any pics out there?
shameless plug
Any of you Aussie crime nuts should probably be made aware that I wrote this, runner-up in last year's Penguin Crime Awards

Size IS everything
I gotta disagree, I'm only 5'7" and 140 lbs and reasonably fit so I don't have much of a cabaret curve at all but if I'm looking for something to wear myself, as opposed to sell, I definitely have to look for 50's LARGE or OS (a size seemingly local only), whereas today's...
Having spent many years selling vintage clothes, I find it remains a truism that people are larger now, and it's difficult to fit them into the smaller vintage garments, however I notice one thing, it's the shoulders that are often the problem: I work in an area with a LOT of tourist traffic...
under current
I always assumed they were originally military underwear that became popularised by Dean, Brando et al, and the 'wifebeater' as you call it was a garment with a completely different development, (in this country at least).
Indian Giver
Mate of mine had one of those, but he was about as mechanical as a jellyfish, so he strolls out of the pub one day, and can't get it started.
Some guy walking past says 'can I help?' sits on it, fiddles about, next thing up it starts, Brmmm, brmm, the guy looks at him winks and...
Runaway
I can never forget the scene in "Runaway Train" where Jon Voight loses some fingers in the coupling..very well done, an amazing piece of stunt work....
desperado
Drinking Bay Rum has been done alright, but not by me, I haven't even tried the shearer's friend...lemon essence, as seen in the classic "Sunday Too Far Away". (Look it up)
Down south
No, it was here, in Sydney actually, they have a pretty amazing library there, I can't remember if it was in the Mitchell section or not.

Maybe
I just checked my collection, no black hats with moth holes, and one is nearly 70 years old, could it be the dye, or maybe the moth's sense of camouflage puts it off, as they would blend in on lighter colours.....?????
Never treated hats with any preparations, I was always of the impression that well-made felt was enough in itself...interesting thing about the Drizabone though, you will get uncomfortably hot in them very quickly when exerting yourself such as walking up a steep hill in a hurry, but if you...
Empirical data: we are in the middle of cyclonic conditions here, and cut off by floods, I can therefore report that during my perambulations about the district assessing creek crossings and the like, a brand-new Resistol Haymaker lasted just under 45 minutes before leaking down my face...
