Shoulder to the wheel

dr greg

One Too Many
Having spent many years selling vintage clothes, I find it remains a truism that people are larger now, and it's difficult to fit them into the smaller vintage garments, however I notice one thing, it's the shoulders that are often the problem: I work in an area with a LOT of tourist traffic, and Aussies and Americans for example, are larger in the shoulders than say the French or the English, let alone the Japanese (who strangely never seem to buy vintage clothes, which is a puzzle considering the size of the repro industry there, but I digress).
My theory is that, putting gym-junkies aside, the dominant ball sports of the respective countries seem to be a determinant: soccer, more prevalent in Europe, doesn't require any real upper body skills, (apart from being able to throw one's arms in the air as one falls down occasionally:) ) whereas gridiron and the various rugbies are tackling games, requiring a tougher trunk, and Aussie Rules is generally very physical, therefore young people develop according to the game they play at school or professionally.
Then again, maybe those of us in warmer climes swim more..........

very interesting observation. I have sold tons of vintage other items to Japanese. Back in the not long ago before USPS went nuts Japanese dealers would buy me out at high prices and resell at their stores in Japan.
Truth is alot of the vintage ladies clothing is very small and would fit them very nicely.
Maybe the Americans are beefed up with the steroids in our food. lol

People are larger, but by and large, not that much larger. Especially when you factor out the recent American trend to beefiness.

What comes into play in vintage clothing - and very few people consider this - is that the common sizes mostly got worn out and trashed decades ago. Most of what's left today wouldn't have fit the average man or woman then, either.

I gotta disagree, I'm only 5'7" and 140 lbs and reasonably fit so I don't have much of a cabaret curve at all but if I'm looking for something to wear myself, as opposed to sell, I definitely have to look for 50's LARGE or OS (a size seemingly local only), whereas today's MEDIUM, is usually nearly too big...
I have sold stuff online to Japanese customers, but what I'm referring to are tourists in the flesh, who look blankly at me when I point out "real aloha" or "vintage Levi". and these are young backpackers, not baseball cap types.
I even at one stage had some repro hawaiians on the "harajuku" label, they didn't know it, couldn't give 'em away...maybe the repro community over there is not that large a proportion of the genpop.

Definitely, I wear from a 8 to 12 depending on item. Petite size.
In vintage I have to have from 16 to 18.

Believe me as I fall in love with dresses and stuff and then find the waist is 24.0 inches or something.
