With the plain slant impressed Dobbs on the sweat and the patent from 1940 (and the $10 price tag), you have a early to mid-40's hat there.....NICE! -

And from yet one more....1915. I find the "western" styes intriguing....they are more 19th century "Plains" style with the low crowns and "never flop" flat brims......some of the fedoras in this catalog have the wild bows common in the mid-teens. -

I situations like that the buyer was not INTENTIONALLY misrepresenting the item, they were giving information as they understood it. Fraud is Knowingly and INTENTIONALLY misrepresenting an item to increase its value/desirability. BIG difference from citing possible family provenance. Though... -
