Having sampled both ... it has a nicer look and feel IMHO, especially the Matte version .... looks and feels like 10 year old CXL, which I really liked. Both CXL and any other horse is a waste product from Shell Butt production ... but WHAT a waste product to have :)

Just pushed the button on a Lavant in Matte Horween CT Horsehide ( which I actually like better than the CXL ) ..... also got a CX Bison Detroit on Order ( both in Black ... I've got enough brown jackets) ...... the Horween Bison samples were STUNNING very grainy and really reminiscent of the...

Bill Kelso Mfg - Official Affiliate Thread

It was a sale jacket .. I had the sleves shortened by AL by 1" ( after the picture) ... it was the only mod needed IMHO and the result was pretty much spot on for what I wanted. (though some disagreed ... from the infamous " you could fit a spacesuit under it" to " it's 4" too long ") The...

The Magnificent Seven / The Sons of Katie Goodyear (Pic heavy)

Another supporter here of the Beckman Chukka's ... I have a pair of the 9017's and also a pair of the ones made for J. Crew both in Burgundy ... which are equally fine and broadly the same ( the J. Crew have a pull tab on the rear and the heel is a little shorter in length .. otherwise...

Horween Chromexel Steer not dyed all the way through

NOTE ... the surface dying which is applied to CXL steerhide is IDENTICAL to that applied to CXL Horsehide and the wear will be almost identical IMHO. I have Horween steer and FQHH and veg tanned HH from various eras ( 80's, 90's, 00's and current decades ) and while there are differences in...

Horween Chromexel Steer not dyed all the way through

It's not unique in this .... Wet Blue is generally considered unfinished leather. What is unique is HOW it is both Chrome and finished (Veg tanned and oiled) i.e what the constituents Horween use for the tanning liquors and also the oils / fats / waxes used for the post tanning processes. I...

Horween Chromexel Steer not dyed all the way through

Just caught up on this .... 12 pages almost on the durabillity of Horween CXL .. :D As you say .. the CXL Steer .. in black / burgandy / brown ... or any other colour for that matter ... is hand applied and surface dyed ( not vat dipped but hand applied to the finished surface of the...

Is there lead in vintage leather pigment?

Veg dyed typically does not contain lead .... although some lead pigment dyed veg TANNED jackets can be found. Equally the lead is usually in the PIGMENT DYE and not typically the TANNING liquors ( although these can contain other heavy metal salts e.g. Chromium (III) Sulphate in Chrome...

Is there lead in vintage leather pigment?

There may have been in actual vintage pigments ( probably at much higher levels than currently) .... and there is certainly some still used now in modern reproductions. There are other heavy metals in pigments and tanning materials ( Chrome tanning ... there is a clue in the name :D) currently...

Need help finding the "right" B-3 jacket

I'm 170cm and 88kg, 109cm Chest, 90cm waist and the Eastman 44" Irvin is "just" long enough ... at 183cm I'd suggest it'd be a little short in both the body and the arm. The Eastman 44" fits like an Aero 42". The B-3 is similarly cut to the Irvin and I'd go with a 44" LONG for your height...

    The dreaded inside pocket question

It is a common feature with the AL jackets also ( I don't count it as an issue .. althouigh some may ). I can understand why some amy find it an issue .... I just don't on either Aero or AL jackets ... it's a feature which like others you may like, dislike or be agnostic to .. I'm simply...

which one is better, aero or alexander

I HAVE NO BIAS HERE( I have both and like them both) I have to say I disagree with the concensus that AL jackets fit larger that Aero .... I have both in various similar models and I'd suggest that AL run slightly trimmer and a little truer to "actual" size. - A 44" Aero Vest De Rally...

Well I KNOW where they came from ... and it isn't where you think :D As an aside .. looks like my next "Alexander" will be a Simmons Bilt in Mongolian Tan Horse with side entry pockets rather than patch ones .... I just need to get over my button issue ! I got a few horsehide samples from AL...

4 month review of Bill Kelso A2 Victory Horse Dark Seal Aero 18775

A GREAT looking A2 .... with GREAT features. The sort of jacket which makes me want to get one because they look so good ( along with many of JC's creations). They are truely things of beauty ... but sadly I have an aversion to elasticated cuffs and waist's :( Awesome though .... wear it well.

Only on the FL could a copy of a copy of someone elses design (Irvin .. the rights to which are held by Motolita I think), with a copy of a copy of someone elses zipper design ( Air Ministry / DoT ... the rights to which are held by the Ministry of Defence I believe) ... be accused of being a...
