That hat that is pictured is called the Roma by Borsalino . We are sold out of them and are expecting another shipment next week. There seems to be a problem this year with Borsalino and their straw hat manufacturing. I know that they dont manufacture all of their straw hats but I think their...
Hatco could make the hat a 2 5/8 inch brim if we ordered it that way. I figured that people would want a standard 2 1/2" brim. Perhaps I could ask for a Cav edge !!. Nah , just kidding.

The hat will most likely be a 2 1/2 inch brim . We now have to decide on the wider binding or the standard 4 line even binding that is used today.
What do fellow loungers think?

We are working woth Hatco to change the Nostalgia around a little to give it more of a 1940's look. The current version has a 22line band with a 2 1/2" brim. We are going to sell the hats with a 19 line band with a bound edge . This will make it look more like the "Whippet" style from the past...
The bottom line is no one is being forced to buy anything on Ebay. It could be that the person who purchased the hat liked it even though it wasnt a real Whippet. He just wanted a hat. I have seen other hats that were made of wool sell for more online on Ebay than they would at my stores...
It's not a Whippet. Judging by the box, that hats is probably no more than a few years old. They havent made a "Whippet" for years .

There may be one other store in Detroit for hats , but Henry the Hatter is still the best. I think the main store on Broadway carries the best selection of hats.

I think that coupons are great to attract business but compare prices on sites beforehand. I had call from a customer who wanted to purchase a Borsalino Como from us but wanted free shipping as it was offered on another site. When I explained to him that our base price was 40.00 less than the...
The Huckel wharehouse is actualy 2 minutes from one of our stores. The problem is that becaue of the Euro ,even Tonack (Huckel) hats will be going up in price. Use to be that one could get hats at a decent price, but no more .

That Royal Delux is 100% fur felt not wool. I cant tell you how many times a customer will come into our store for a hat and not know that hats are made from fur , not wool.

Forstadts were a group of hat stores that were in the NY areas during the 1940-s until the 1970's. They had a store in Brooklyn, Harlem and Midtown Manhattan.

Feltfan, we are lucky just to have a salesman period! It is so hard for the hat companies today to find someone who will travel to sell hats. We just met our new salesman for Stetson. While he is a very nice guy , I know more about hats than he ever will . I had to explain to him what a welted...
The Knox hats of today are in fact specialy made hats for Levine Hats in St Louis .They are made by Hatco as are Stetson and Dobbs. I've seen them and they arent any different than your average Stetson hat. in fact , the factory outlet in Garland had loads of them the last time I was there.

These patents are amazing. They could be done but the problem is the cost involved in preparing the bodies. The original Cavanagh patent shows the welting done at the start of the hat production when the body of the hat is still in it's cone shape. From what I was told , the lone body...
The hat actualy dates from the 1980's . We have a few hats with that lining in our store. The quality is better than what is made for todays hats but not as good as a vintage 1950's Stetson.

There are quite a few books wriiten about hats. I believe there was an old thread about this. Scientific Hat Finishing is definately a good one , now available in a reprint form.

I think that the new hat will work better with a bound edge, to look like the old "Whippet" hat from the 1940's. It seems that to make a hat with a brim bigger than 2 1/2" with a welted edge means using a bigger body . This willl increase the price.
I have also been trying the same styling...
I had dinner with the production manager of Stetson on Thursday. We are working on a 2 5/8: brim with either a welted or bound edge hat with an open crown. Getting them to do anything different is hard.
