I took a look at a couple of Himel jackets at 14 oz. Berlin about a week and a half ago. This is a photo of my tour guide wearing the Canuck.
They're very, very nice. I think that the finishing is slightly nicer than an Aero or Alexander, but whether it's worth spending twice as much on one...
Careful Worf, watches are a whole lot more expensive than leather jackets.
If you're looking at new watches then be aware that some brands buy in movements, whereas others have created theirs in-house. The latter are known as a manufacture. There's a bit of snobbishness towards the former, but...
Nice jacket Simon. I'm a fan of the Hercules, used to have one myself, with the old style quilted lining, but the shearling will be seriously warm in comparison.
Any plans to go and work for the British Antarctica Survey? :D
I use black polish on my pair. It'll darken them slightly, but if you do it regularly (err, which I don't) then they'll turn a lovely dark burgundy colour.
If you commission a bespoke or custom article of clothing always take this advice.
Nice jacket, Simon. I like the detailing on it.
Butte, Simon's jeans are the 1955S Ironheart cut. (No, I'm not that much of a denim nerd. I saw his post elsewhere.)
I took a look at one of the Hippy Jackets at Galashiels last year, but (unfortunately) the XL size was too small. I asked Holly earlier this year about doing a bigger one, but Ken said no. :(
I do like the style a lot, but (alas) it didn't happen.
Worf's got an old jacket of mine (which looks far better on him than it does on me), and that's got zippered handwarmer pockets. I never had any problems with them, and the zips weren't particularly noticeable.
A well made pair of bespoke or benchmade shoes should last you thirty or forty years. The English style of construction can be repaired or resoled easily, and the point of failure tends to be the uppers which will wear through eventually.
Calfskin tends to be the most durable option, and will...
If I received a $5K windfall then I'd be incredibly boring and stick in into savings.
However, if I wanted to spend it on something special then I'd commission a bespoke suit or pair of shoes. Granted the whole amount would barely get you started for a pair from Lobb's, but a smaller maker...
The Aero Leathers Northeaster is a similar style, albeit with different details. If you stripped off the belt, requested plain cuffs, added a bi-swing back, and re-arranged the pockets then you'd be pretty close. Or request elasticated sides on a long half-belt.
The Bavarian deerskin is awesome. I've put an order in with Aero for a Cafe Racer made out of it, which I'll be getting unlined as the inner is smooth, and retains the natural tan colour. The dye is on the outside surface only.
The leather is produced in a small tannery that's pretty much the...
I had a few samples off Aero for a jacket that didn't happen, and I rather liked the russet jerky horsehide. The oil pulled hide is something else to consider.
I'd also strongly suggest the Bavarian deerskin that Aero have got in right now. I've just put an order in for an unlined Cafe Racer in it.
