I'm not an Aussie, but an import. (I came in under $1000, so didn't have to pay any duties. :p) I just haven't got around to updating my location tag yet.
@AdeeC I live in your neighbourhood. :)
Australian customs are only imposed for an item with a value of more than $1000. In the UK the limit is much lower, somewhere around £15 or £20. So the chances are that you'll dodge them on most parcels coming into the country, assuming you're not...
Thanks for the suggestion of leather cuffs. I'm just sorting out what jacket I'm going to get JC to build for me, and that's a useful idea.
What watches do you wear?
I used to have a Breitling diver's watch, and the bezel would sometimes catch on the jacket's lining. I never had any problem...
The rule of thumb that I've heard is to use jacket length to balance your body proportions.
I've got a short torso and long legs, so tend to suit a longer cut. My younger brother is a similar height, but with a longer body and shorter legs, so a waist length jacket would work better for him...
I saw the Good Wear Grizzly last week. It is all kinds of awesome, and I'm trying to think of reasons not to buy it.
The main problem with that jacket is that I live in Melbourne, and I think that I'd spontaneously combust if I wore it here.
Heller's Café did a Grizzly with a cinch back...
I prefer Rivet and Hide to Son of a Stag.
With a two hour window, I'd have started with Rivet and Hide, walked down to American Classics, and then onto RMC and the Cabourn stores. The last two are pretty much on opposite sides of the street.
Iron Heart are one of the few Japanese brands that go up to a 46" chest. That's largely the influence of having an international office and a large fan base of large Germans!
I think that 3Sixteen top out a touch smaller, but might be worth a look. They're a US company, so sizing is a bit more...
That particular vest has a flannel lining to increase its warmth.
There's also a (currently available) vest based on the N1 deck jacket, which is better insulated.
Whilst the denim cut-off over a leather is an iconic look, I'm not sure if it'll fit in with the aesthetic that a lot of...
Thanks Seb. Getting a local opinion is helpful. Maybe I'll take another look at JC's civilian jackets.
It looks like Devilish and Big J are disagreeing. Just to confuse me. :D
Thanks.
Anyone got any comparisons with (e.g.) a half-belt? Do the knitted cuffs trap heat at all?
AdeeC, I'm in Melbourne which has a reputation for cold weather. (I think that the locals are soft.) SA is a bit warmer.
I'm currently trying to sort out an order with John Chapman for a jacket. OK, I have been for a while, but we've both been variously occupied with other things, and I'm the world's most indecisive person.
I'd originally been thinking about an M422 or G1 style jacket, but saw an old thread...
I asked John Chapman if he'd build a leather version of one of these. I thought it'd be an interesting jacket.
Unfortunately he's a bit busy right now to consider it. Ah well.
If you're interested in the story behind the William Gibson line, then check out this interview at Rawr Denim.

Yes, the collection is named after that William Gibson.
Hawksmoor Seven Dials is a far better place to get burgers from in that part of town.
There's also Rivet and Hide a short walk away, which is a fantastic denim shop if you want something obscure and Japanese.
Unfortunately I moved out of London about a week before the RMC shop opened. :(
I just had a promo email saying that it's opening in December.
It's on Henrietta Street, which already has the Cabourn store, and a short walk away from Rivet and Hide and American Classics.
Yeah, it's becoming an increasingly expensive part of town...
The coat has a button-up, rather than zip, front. I was told it dates from the First World War. It doesn't look like an Irvin.
Apparently the damage has been done by putting it up in the window each morning and taking it down at night. They're looking at getting it repaired.
