After yesterdays new arrival was found to have a bit of a tear in the sweatband anyway, I got brave and decided to give it a good cleaning. Sat out on the patio with a 5 gal bucket and a can or white gas, sloshing and rinsing for about 45 minutes. Got an amazing amount of gunk out! Looks way...
the date tag (09/13/06) was actually stuck to the felt of the crown under the bigger model tag. Sad note was that I did find a tear in the sweatband that was taped together. Little dissappointed that the sweat is actually a really really thin piece of leather like material laminated on some kind...
Mystery solved... pulled the liner out so I could do some cleaning, and I found a little skinny tag under the sweatband that had a date of 09/06/06 on it. not as old as I thought, but thats fine... I can wear it like I stole it now with no fear of hurting value!!
My nice mailman dropped off a new box today... I needed a new rugged wear outdoor hat and found a pre owned LLBean / Stetson -Moose River in silverbelly. Its beautifully soft ( definitely not "cowboy hat felt"). Pretty decent condition. Can anyone identify from the pics about its age? Im...
recently Ive found pictures on here where someone replaced a sweatband, but also affixed a section of the original trashed sweatband with the original stampings. Best of both worlds... a new functional sweat AND the original markings!
Had to go out and kill some grass ( I have grass growing up through the street.... one of the perks of living in a laid back rural area!). One of my Grandfathers old Champs looked lonely... Took him outside for a little daylight
Theres a couple nice lighter weight Akubras like Leisure Time, and Traveler. Traveler is sort of a semi crushable I think. David Morgan up near Seattle is one of the big Akubra dealers here in the US. Thats where my ex wife bought my Lawson many years ago lol
I agree....Ive got an Akubra Lawson thats been my bad weather hat since the early 2000s when I was still up in Seattle. Been soaked many a time and still looks great... not quite as dark as original, but has held up nicely
Nice stitching! are you doing by hand or machine? Brim binding / sewing is my next big learning experience. I just figured out how to use a smaller needle on my cylinder arm leather machine to sew in leather sweatbands...I felt like I owned the world when I finished the first one! lol
Reworked free-to-me Stetson "Gus". Reblocked to get rid of the front crease and trimmed a full inch off the brim (now 3"). Seriously thinking of reducing the brim just a bit more. The panama band is temporary, but its growing on me
Todays project.... A little Stetson sold by Miller Hats a few years ago. Nice "Imperial Ultimate" felt. Disassembled hat, did a bit of blocking to square things up a tad ( Crown had a pretty severe slope in front and sides tapered in a lot) treated dried sweatband, sewed it back in, Replaced a...
