    Guttersnipe, vintage British suits are closer to the body than American suits (assuming we're talking 30s-40s, not early 20s). 3" is the standard amount of ease room in an off the peg Burtons, CC41, demob suit or similar. 2" though is doable over a shirt, for a very fitted, but acceptable look...
