    Felt hats in summer..

Straw in summer, and a ventilated straw is cooler than one that is not. For yard work a cheap fedora, cotton brim and crown top, the crown sides are a nylon mesh all around, and the sweatband and brim often gets sweat soaked. Cooler weather, it's felt all the way

    Hats in restaurants

If the establishment has TV screens, and usually multiple ones at that, it is not that high of a class place, and I will wear whatever I want. Nicer places are for dining not watching TV. My pet peeve is all the new chain eateries that have no sound deading acoustic qualities and are loud, so...

    Show us your Guns!

No pics, but I just finished assembling my latest. It's a little fun gun a Ruger 10/22 International. I found a very nice stock on eBay, the purchased one of the 50th anniversary receivers, a Tactical Innovations CNC milled trigger housing with a Kidd trigger installed. The bolt is also a...

    The Open Road Guild

I currently have at least six Open Roads. The nicest is a 20x from Paris Hatters, then a couple of the real Panama straw from Myer the Hatter. Next is a Shantung straw, then one of the newer Stetsons, 6x I think, and finally an older one I got off eBay that is really nice and soft. I did have...

    Show us your Guns!

I live in E. Texas, a bit north of the big thicket, and still have a house over in NE Louisiana. My preference has always been for walnut and honestly with the humidity here, either from the numerous swamps near Monroe, La or the constant Gulf breezes bringing humidity into the area around...

    Show us your Guns!

I have one of those little revolvers, in the Titanium lite verision with Craig Spigel ( I think) grips that look identical to those. That little gun is so light it hurts to shoot it with hotter 38 Special loads., The nice thing with the proper pocket holster it does not pull your pants down.

    Safari Express rifle pic thread

That's one fine looking rifle. Probably 12-14 years ago I picked up a couple of the 1894-1994, Model 94 centennial rifles in essentially the same pattern The have rather fancy wood, although the wood to metal fit leaves a bit to be desired, 26" half octagon-half round barrels, crescent...

    Show us your Guns!

Agreed, vastly increased bullet velocity equals more recoil velocity to your shoulder. I generally prefer the old classic calibers, 6.5x55, 7x57, 30-06, 30-30, 38-55 45-70, 32-20, 405 win, 375 H&H and 458 Win, all at moderate velocities, I really do not want to shoot at something I cannot hit...

    Courage to Wear a Fedora

Well said. I started my felt odessy with the Banjo Patterson, then to the Campdraft in open crown models which I shaped myself.

    Courage to Wear a Fedora

Like you I was rather timid about wearing a hat. I have always had a western straw or felt, but even limited their use. A few years back I started with some of the Tilley hats in the spring for rain protection and shade and got to like them, and got a few nice comments so gravitated to one...

    Have you found Hidden Treasure?

Not a real treasure, but a nice find. I got married in 1972 and later that year the USAF sent my new bride and myself to Turkey for two years . In the spring of 1974 we took a base chapel tour to Israel. While there we had the opportunity to go "swimming" in the Dead Sea. While wading in...

    Seasons for your hats

I do find a difference between fur and straw. There is also a difference between a straw with open weave venting vs a non vented style. I also have a couple of models of Tilley hats, one with a band of mesh venting around the top of the crown vs one with a couple of large grommets for vents...

Your family D DAY stories 70 years on...

Not D-Day but June 7. A close friend of my fathers rode ashore on a motorcycle. He had been drafted into the Marines, then somehow transferred to the army to serve as a bodyguard and courier for Gen Eisenhower. He was told on the transfer that he would be promoted to corporal and would remain...

Reshaping a straw Open Road--can it be done?

Last year Meyer the Hatter, in New Orleans had new Stetson Panama straw Open Roads. I picked up a couple, one for now, one for the future. They are more of a tan color and not nearly as white or stiff as the shantung models. Much nicer, but I don't have a clue about reshaping.

Another alternative to summer straws- CORK FEDORA!

It looks much like small pieces of cork bonded together like particle board.

Do's and Don'ts of shaping a "cowboy" hat

I have done a couple of older cattlemens crease to a fedora or diamond crease. I have a newer model Open Road and it is so stiff that I doubt that I could recrease it. I did manage to turn the front of the brim down more like a fedora and like it that way.

I did ! I found the perfect hat for me !

Please do not take comments as snobbish. Although not my style, I did start by wearing cloth hats, mostly more casual Tilley types, and then graduated to straw and felt. As for overly expensive straw, some are some are not, and they are really made from the same straw. It's just that the...

    Akubra Lightning Ridge

Banjo was my first felt years, I bought both colors and honestly wish I had passed on the charcoal. I am thinking about a Lightning Ridge in sand next fall. Of all the hats I have bought since the Banjo in Heritage Fawn has seen the most use.

Men (or women) What is your favorite perfume for women?

After using Nina Richi for years, I got my wife to switch to Lilia, by Gier Ness. She loves it.

Of Sheep-Dip, Rot-Gut, and Furniture Polish. The worst of the worst.

When you mentioned Sheep Dip in the thread title, I thought you were referring to the brand of Scotch whiskey, Sheep Dip. It and Pig's Nose are not the best but far from the worst out there.
