Good to see im not alone ..... my guilty pleasures (with current numbers) are leather jackets (27), boots (19) motorcycles (6) and guitars (12).
Pretty much 80% ebay lurker/buyer and 20% sale pages. I seldom buy new (now) as theres a plentiful pre-owned market which wasnt the case 20-30 years...
Stay clear of leather below 0DegC ... not just CXL ... any leather. It’s simply not useful or insulative enough. I have a medium weight CXL, shearling lined LHB and it’s ok but has the water resistance of a large sponge ( the issue isnt rain - it doesn’t rain at -10) it’s damp and thaw Even...
I have to say in 30 years of leather jacket collecting the normal hanger and pipe insulation solution has worked for everything I’ve thrown st it .... from a LW Anj-4 to a late 90’s Aero Vest De Rallye coming in at over 10lb ..... and the solution costs about 2 bucks.
Had this happen a fair bit in 2nd hand jackets and both my highwayman and my Californian needed relined after less than 5 years (light cotton drill) The weakest lining is the light cotton drill as per the A2 ... lasts 3-5 years daily use IMHO. Lightweight tartan e.g. the Grant tartan fitted to...
Same way you wash a leather jacket .... or some aficionados would say a pair of IH selvedge jeans .... I think you just let your body fluids season them :)
My LHB ( brown CXL FQHH) is 13 or 14 years old this year ( I think) ... it's shearling lined and gets worn every winter quite extensively ... I noticed after about 10 years that the colour of the leather under the collar ( it has a rust mouton collar) is noticeably darker than the colour of the...
I've said it before and I'll probably say it again :) .... of all the shearlings the D-1 is the most practical for the UK climate ( especially with a little room for a jumper or a scarf underneath )
Great pick ... wear it well.
What do I consider ART (physical as opposed to performance) ... a well executed painting (be it landscape, portrait or occasionally even abstract - though I struggle a bit with abstract), sculpture especially when representative of life form ( sorry .. an unmade bed or a pile of bricks isn't...
Thats closer to Art than a fully functional motorcycle :) - shocking brakes, rubbish saddle, awful riding position, pretty poor engine and at best average suspension ... a Suzuki SV650 would out handle and out perform it in almost every capacity. I never understood the logic ... like people who...
This is why I am glad I'm a scientist and engineer .... and I'm still convinced modern repro leather jackets are much more engineered products than Art, this thread just convinces me even more after all they are REPRODUCTIONS and the originals were by and large utilitarian products primarily for...
To my mind I can appreciate good form but it should never supersede function ( I'm an engineer ... sorry :) ) The Ducati 916 is a stunning looking motorcycle however it's form is superceded by it's functional capability (albeit only just given the reliability and servicing issues - yes I did own...
Usually right after I take possession of it :) ...... there's no such thing as a keeper and every leather jacket has a price that I'd sell it at. Maybe I'm just a buyer and seller rather than a keeper (though I have WAY too many jackets). The longest I've owned a leather is 27 years (my Furygan...
I roll up button cuff leather jacket sleeves all the time (unbuttoned). Shearling jackets (ANJ-4 / D-1) ... yup. Knitted cuff sleeves (G-1 / A-2) .. yup. Especially if they are only an inch or so too long. Other than minor creasing it doesn't "damage" the leather in any way. Though it may put...
Often I have found the buckle slip is because the buckle is no longer flat and has curved with use. By flattening the buckle ( just bending it a little - and I mean a little - with my fingers or lightly tapping it with a rubber mallet) allows it to cinch and grab the leather more effectively...
There are those on here who are fiercely loyal to one manufacturer or another .... equally there are those who are not (myself included). There are those on here for whom a product purchase is a morally guided affair (regardless of the nature or basis of the morals) .... and there are those for...
My three ...
Pike Bros N-1 (the perfect winter job for dry conditions)
Schott 740N Peacoat or an original .. though I think the Schott is a better jacket TBH
Filson Double Mackinaw Cruiser
if it's really awful out .. ventile or goretex and down can't be beaten IMHO.
Shearling is warm but...
a liberal sprinkling with Sodium Bicarb ( or buy a couple of the little bags you get for removal of odor from your fridge from the supermarket ) ..... works every time.
