Sure it happened... but far less frequently than today, particularly for items like leather jackets. The internet and email are great enablers of globalization for small companies. Few people are willing to put up with the inconvenicence of making a phone call at 3am just to order a jacket...
Ahem... Just think about it for a moment... not everyone lives in Europe. The time difference + work schedules can make telephone contact with Scotland difficult, at best. If you're communicating by email anyway, I don't see how the middleman makes a heck of a lot of difference.
The 1st thing to try is just warm water with bit of mild soap (liquid hand soap or dish-washing liquid). If that doesn't work, I recommend Lexol Leather Cleaner as the safest option:

If the stain really is sun-block, I'd guess the...
I placed and order through Mark Moye in April 09 and then waited 13 months for my HG-5 after an initial promised delivery of 3-4 months. After the first 4 months, I started asking for a status or updated delivery date once every 3 months or so... and received meaningless brush-offs like "it...
Hope this doesn't sound rude, but have you considered, umm... just a t-shirt instead of a jacket? I mean, for the price of a painted jacket you could have a whole collection of t-shirts with the dog's photo or other artwork. And if you finally decide you don't like the t-shirts after all, you...
Naked leather is very supple and has a soft, buttery feel right out of the box. It doesn't require any break-in at all. FCL leather is full-grain, so it has a nice, pebbly grain when new, but the grain tends to fade over the years, leaving a smooth, dull surface (at least, the fading is quite...
Just a few things worth mentioning, imo...
By standard methods of grading, FCL jackets are actually higher grade leathers than Vanson (full-grain naked for FCL vs. top-grain finished for Vanson).
On the other hand, Vanson leathers acquire graininess with time, whereas the original grain...
Unless you have some unusual proportions (long arms, large shoulders, whatever), a size 36 should fit... although in a modern, off-the-rack, "looser than vintage" sort of way. Sleeve length should be good, and I would expect enough room in the torso to allow an additional moderate-to-heavy...
Just looks like a plain old slip knot to me...
Tie an overhand knot in the buckle end, pass the free end thru the loop before you draw the overhand loop closed, and then pull it tight. I may be wrong, but that's sure what the photo looks like to me.
I gotta go with Peacoat on this one... nothing is better than zip sleeves on a riding jacket. On the other hand, if I didn't ride, I might be very tempted by button cuffs, which do have a nice look. I don't really care for wool cuffs at all; for some reason elastic cuffs just annoy me, and I'd...
Lost Worlds jacket sizes are definitely modern... in fact, a new LW jacket might feel a bit oversize at first, until it breaks in a bit. I wear a size 38 from several manufacturers including: Vanson (snug, trim fit), Aero (trim fit for Cafe racer, loose fit for HG-5), and Lost Worlds (not as...
OK, I've tried to resist, but now I just have to throw in my completely irrelevant opinion. This is not at all intended as an insult... just an honest statement of how I see it. I already know that plenty of people here disagree, and that's fair enough.
As I see it, the problem isn't that you...
Thanks for the info, Tommer :D .
Duly noted that the Langlitz was NOT your first attempt at dying leather, and that anything I do is entirely at my own risk. (Which means, of course, that I will cuss at you under my breath, but I can't blame you out loud ;) ). I'm sure I can find some really...
Perhaps you're doing this already, but you might consider a windshield for the bike in winter. Even a small windshield (but larger than a flyscreen) can block a lot of wind and is worth at least one (very good) layer of clothing. I use windshields on both my bikes from Thanksgiving thru Easter...
Thanks for the pics, Tommer! Some very nice grain developing on the jacket. And I do like that color... much richer than the factory brown. I'm not familiar with the dye you mentioned, so I'll have to do some homework, but I love your results. I assume you've had no problems with the dye on your...
Thanks for the photo, 1087, the jacket looks even better in it's natural habitat. Glad to hear you had a great (and safe) time. Nice bike, too!
And btw, I've wanted to ask you about the "non-curly" mouton collar for your J23. Can you compare the feel of this to the standard "curly" variety...
I think the first rule is to ask about specific vendors. There are no "rules of thumb" for sizing that are universal to all vendors, so you just have to become familiar with the ones you do business with. The only usable answers you can get here will be to a question like "How do the sizes for...
You may want to consider a deerskin jacket: lightweight, light color, very breathable... by far to most comfortable leather for hot weather (and rain won't hurt it). Certainly not as much protection as cowhide or horse, but at least as much as a safari jacket, assuming the seams are well sewn...
