On this Christmas eve I'll share a thought that has bothered me for many years. As every other Christmas, children are hearing traditional Christmas songs and even being made to sing some of them. They must be mystified by so many of the references, which are long obsolete. Few have ever seen chestnuts roasting on an open fire. How many 21st century children would know what sleighbells are if they heard them? Have any ever seen a one-horse open sleigh? And are there children anywhere in the world who will go to bed with visions of sugarplums dancing in their heads? Would any of them recognize a sugarplum if they saw one? I guess a new X-Box will make up for all the nonsense they are subjected to.

I'd rather eat, drink, and not take a spouse, thank you very much. ;)
Each to their own, my wife is my life, she is my treasure, my rock, my support and my being. One day, if it has to be, those words, that I swore in front of witnesses, to death us do part, will be a reality. It has to be, but it's so hard to face...........................let alone bear.

I grew up wondering what an "elephant boat" was supposed to be.

You're underestimating the importance of imagination on this festive season, sir....;) It is the nature of tradition to be passed down through the generations & although we now overemphasize the mercantile aspect of Noël because we have become over bloated consumerists, the idealized, antiquated imagery of christmas past, still lives on in the collective imagination & the themed songs & carols that drive us all nuts at this time of the year, are part of the transmission process.
Don't worry about the kiddies though, they hear a lot of things they don't know much about, it's called learning..:D

They still try to write Christmas songs but they are all boring depressing rubbish. There were a few from the fifties that are empty and meaningless but cheerful. For a decent, touching Christmas song you have to go back to the 19th century and earlier, when people actually believed in Christianity.

Many of the Christmas songs are actually seasonal, having nothing to do with the Nativity. I mean, "Frosty the Snowman"? Gimme a break. "Winter Wonderland,""Jingle Bells" and many others are about winter and snow, but you only hear them during the Christmas season.

Disturbing realization? Here it is only five hours remaining in this day -- December 25, 2015 -- and I'm left with this empty feeling of having missed out on the true meaning of the War on Christmas.

Wish I could resurrect Vince Guaraldi and have him score a cartoon musical about it.

Are you trying to tell me, Grandma Got Run Over By A Reindeer, is not a touching Christmas song? :)

Well 'Jingle bells' (originally titled 'One Horse Open Sleigh') was in fact written for Thanksgiving back in 1857......

Apparently, in the UK yesterday (christmas day), there were twice as many people shopping online as that went to church. I wonder what the score was in America!........................this is a great advancement for our societies as before online shopping, people had to wait until the 26th before they could start spending again, the cruelty & suffering was unimaginable.
