My ig account is private and my followers are friends and family. The photo's I share are mostly holiday pic's. Not a single jacket photo, the few followers I have couldn't care less about jackets.

I do follow a lot of Japanese jacket makers or multi brand store's accounts just for inspiration. And of course Field Leathers. He always shares every single step of jacket making which I think is really cool. Like a time lapse of him selecting the hides to get the panels to match in terms of grain and thickness.

Posers aside I still think there is a lot of good inspiration and interesting accounts on IG. It is a great place to keep up with shops and generally speaking men’s fashion (I assume we are all interested in that in one form or the other as otherwise we wouldn’t be members of a clothing forum whether ones likes to admit it or not).

So, I wouldn’t write it all off, we are all a bit cosplayers after all although some admittedly seem to go a bit too far.

Ok one final try before I give up.

Dave Himel goes fishing, wearing one of his creations.

Real or poser?

Poser, no one who fishes regularly would go fishing in a leather jacket.
Have you gone fishing? Everything you wear will come back smelling of fish!
The first fish you take out of the water will cover your nice leather in fish goop, no thanks.

Yeah, that's exactly it. I'm 98% cosplaying in anything I wear and in fact, I'd go as far as to say that anyone who is wearing what they want is doing the same and there's nothing wrong with that. Otherwise, we'd all be slobs in tracksuits and hoodies.

Cringey, though, are some of the captions some of these posers put up, such as "Quality never goes out of style", "Keeping it real", etc. Dude, you're wearing a pair of jeans. It's really not a big deal at all.

And also, it's so silly how many people began believing that wearing a pair jeans and a denim jacket suddenly constitutes being dressed well. It doesn't. It doesn't make you look bad but in no way is it a spectacular achievement in style.

But on the other hand, what @Marc mndt says, it's cool to see some of this fine gear showcased in the wild and not just product page and some people indeed are genuinely devoted to this sorta clothes & wear it anywhere they go or do - like Himel going fishing, maybe (I mean, if there's a person that wouldn't care, that's him as he can just make another jacket) - and I find that very commendable. And any step taken toward the opposite direction of tracksuits and hoodies is a step toward a better future, better world and betterment of humanity in general.

Poser ... I think anyone who posts photos of themselves, regardless of the platform or audience, is a poser in some way. Why not? As long as it's fun ;-)
Dream girl says I'm the top poser. lol

By poser I meant what @Will Zach explained. Poser as in chopping wood in a grand and a half worth of denim & leather gear (and God knows how much for keeping that beard in check). Posing for a photo, that's what we all do, no argument there.

Yeah, pretending is kind of amusing.
I just see them as actors who just play a role in creating a nice picture. Like a movie actor who, of course, isn't really a lumberjack either.
And understandably this seems ridiculous for some and less so for others. It will be best to take the whole social media world with a wink. ;-)

Posing is digging muddy ditches in $500 heritage-inspired boots while $50 sturdy wellies are what's required. The worst we do here at TFL is walking or riding in the rain in our jackets. Well, save for @jonesy86 who swims in his...;)
It was only a $150 Chinese FW Sunset knockoff. And it is actually nicely broken in now. LOL

I think, apart from the clothes, the difference in poser or genuine is in the way the photo is taken, if the guy is alone, in perfect lighting and angle of course he is a poser for IG likes, same guy same activity same costume if taken casually showing other people showing real scene of activity he is enjoying with other people and one of them capturing the moment then its genuine.

Imagine that thedi in his jacket probably there is a car in front of him with opened back door with camera on tripod just to capture his action picture. I often see in my backwater 3rd world country town, youngsters posing to cross the road with a small crew with a tripod trying to photograph her or him while crossing the road... a life of internet influencer i guess it has reached even to a boring small town.

I don't know what the actual "correct" balance is. If you're posting pictures of yourself on the internet anywhere, there is some ego there. Is it possibly greater on Instagram than other places? Sure, but there is an element to it here as well. I know I'm basically cosplaying with my clothing. I don't do a lot of physical labor. I work in education so I don't need the clothes that I wear. My pictures are "fake" and posed, but I don't care. I don't know if that's the right balance, but I do think that what I post reflects my actual life... a dude who likes to dress like people did 60 + years ago.

I think Vintage Engineer Boots does really put his boots through the ringer and I personally can't overlook his service either. I don't know exactly how "authentic" his feed is, but it feels pretty authentic to me in comparison to a lot of other accounts. Plus he has great style.

i think you misunderstood Dude, i think it is more genuine to just pose rather than doing action pose you know, perfectly captured action shot is to me 99% staged outside of sport and motorsport pictures. even mundane action like crossing the road, opening umbrella, reading a book, all feels fake to me, which is fine for magazine or ad photo, but personally I feel it looks too much for selfies, it makes me imagine the person is followed by photographer and his crew, and he has to hold and freeze a pose, while someone would come to pat his sweat, adjust minute details on the hair, and arrange the creases on his clothes to look "right", and someone else holding aluminum mirror to give indirect lighting, the photographer squatting on the ground to make the perspective look stronger, and 3 2 1 click. :D:D:D

That's a good point. So I'm more honest with my obvious posing :D

I don't think there's a balance at all and I'm with Nave, you're doing it 100% right. You showcase clothes & how they fit, comment on it and that's all good. It's what I wanna see on IG and follow.

Were you to stand in a staged employment line in front of a long closed factory, awkwardly chop wood in a forest while wearing jeans that didn't even crease yet or for whatever reason pour a glass of whiskey in every freaking photo, that'd be a bit ridiculous. I find that whiskey guy to be incredibly annoying.

And I'm all for skinny jeans but that Farmer dude is really overdoing it. Women's stretch leggings aren't a way to go, really.

I'm guessing you don't have your bottle and chrystal whisky glass with you when you go out hiking?
