What I really miss about kid's TV from the late 60s and early 70s (particularly in UK/Europe) is that it was quite dark and uncomfortable. There was a cynicism that I no longer see. Take the last cartoon I posted, the title sequence ends in the destruction of man and the planet.
All the shows I loved were about alienation, untrustworthy authorities, and dystopias were typical children's TV fare. I haven't seen a dystopia on kids' TV for years!

Yeah, kid's tv in general these days seems very dumbed down to what it was. I loved Once Upon a Time... Man - must go looking for it on DVD. I imagie it would be controversial nowadays in parts of the world where Young Earth Creationism is in vogue, as memory serves it portrayed a Darwinist view of the origin of species. Great show, I learned a lot about history from it. I also remember it being particularly sophisticated in its handling of the tragedy of war, most especially the trenches in the Great War.

Many of the older cartoons, say 1960s and previous, were made for adult audiences. Stuff like Warner Bros, Walter Lantz, and Max Fleischer were shown in theaters as part of the 'matinee,' along with newsreels and the main feature. From what I remember, the Flintstones (1960s) were originally a night time network 'sit-com' feature. Adults were a large part of the intended audience.

I know adults watch the Simpsons and Family Guy but that stuffis not my speed.

As a more direct comparison, the baby Looney Tunes is idiocy compared to the originals. I guess that's what can happen when you don't need a major studio to produce 'entertainment' (look at the predominance of today's reality shows).

I love the original version of the theme song much better! And it looks like Speed took a wrong turn and ended up on the set of Kimba. lol

Looney Toons that weren't cut up to cut out the "non-pc" stuff, Garfield, Felix, Gumby...the list goes on and on. Jonny Quest and lots of shows like the Flinstones and the Jetsons used to be shown on Boomerang, not sure if they even show them there anymore as we stopped getting that channel a long time ago. Of course a lot of this stuff I was exposed to via my parents when they found them on VHS but the cartoons that was on when I was little I catch on some throwback channel every once in awhile but it's usually at a time I can't sit and watch them.

BigFitz, I love Davey and Goliath! The Easter and Christmas specials are my favorites. I think TBN shows Davey and Goliath every so often...the last one I saw was the episode where Davey went skiing.

Jonny Quest was the origin of many adventurers and explorers, as well as exposing many to cross cultural considerations far before it was appreciated.

And the original Justice League provided some great, MLE entertainment as well.

Bugs Bunny, Scooby Doo, The Jetsons, Aquaman, and Boris and Natasha from the Cold War influence...good times.

They just don't make cartoons like they used too...I never heard any bodily gas in any form when I was a kid.

I was car crazy from the time I was born, so Speed Racer was a must-see anytime it was on. I wanted the Mach 5 as my own. I used to dream about it. <doot-doot-doot-doot-doot . . . >

The Japanese opening was a little more dramatic (and longer) than the American one. I know I always go from the race track right to the African prairie.

I am too cheap for expanded cable and also tend to be against Ted Turner's thoughts on buying up the rights to everything so only he can broadcast it as Turner Broadcasting and Time Warner sees fit.
