"China" is a great film

Last Halloween at work I dressed as Indy and told some people I was Alan Ladd from "China". Funny thing is, I believe he was named Jones also.

Two funny bits with William Bendix in the movie:
First, when Bendix and Ladd are going to get in a fight, Bendix warns "Someone's gonna get hurt!", Ladd knocks him down, and Bendix' reply? : "I told someone would get hurt."
Second: Look for the full body shot of them walking away from the camera and you'll notice that Bendix is walking hunched over. It is easier to hide Ladd's height in close-ups.

Thanks, Belly Boyo, For Getting My Point

Yes, the other films mentioned are also "leather jacket and hat." There are obviously plenty of those in earlier films to draw from. But the fellow in GOW is wearing, I thought, a remarkably close to ROTLA jacket and hat. Not just A jacket and hat, but almost THE jacket and hat. The others illustrated are wartime flight jackets showing up in postwar films (note the knit cuffs).
Of course, like many people here, I'm a fan of the Indiana Jones films. But sometimes, when I want to wear the tie, jacket and hat, as in the pictures at top, and I get those remarks, I wish they had chosen a plaid jacket and beret for the character... :)
I think in an earlier thread the authenticity of the Indiana Jones jacket to the period was debated in the contaxt of "why buy a Wested?" I also wanted to post these pictures to add to that discussion. This film (Grapes of Wrath) was released in 1940, though I think it is set a few years earlier. Close enough to The Adventurer's time to be of note.
In short, I have way to much time on my hands today. ;) Better slide into my LL Bean Hunter's pants and leather cap and get mowing.

When I was a teeny kid, I saw the movie The Greatest Show on Earth. In it, Chuck Heston portrayed the circus manager or owner or something like that. He wore a brown leather jacket and a fedora in the movie. Here is one photo I found which shows the fedora but not the leather jacket:

Now lets see if that comes up. There is an even better movie poster of him standing in his outfit, but it is awfully teeny. Here is it:

He needs a whip is all.... Probably had one of those, too, or was it the ringmaster?

Thanks, Karol...That movie, For Whom the Bell Tolls, is what got me interested in Fedoras as a kind of adventure wear thing. Even before Raiders. Radiers sort of solidified my interest...if that makes sense.

Whatever, man. We are all adults, and I assume tolerant. Why would the mention of church offend anyone?

CHURCH! CHURCH! The sky is falling, Repent, the end is nigh!

Here ya go...lets really offend someone...MOSQUE! There take that!

How 'bout this...SYNOGOUGE! Wow that's really hitting below the belt.

Big deal.

Back to the point

Simple. I am here to talk about all things Golden Era. I mentioned that I was writing a piece about the service at my churh that had gone two hours. My intent in editing my posts was to prevent the thread from diverting from the point, which is that the guy in the scene from Grapes of Wrath, pictured above, surprised me when I spotted him wearing an "Indy" jacket and hat. I didn't clip it very well, but you could take that fedora off his head and drop it on Harrison Ford's and it might just pass. But for the absent storm flap, the jacket, from what is visible, is pretty close too. That means no knit cuffs, no shearling collar, etc.
It was I who went off-topic. I don't want to talk about church (except in the context of 'take off your hat when in...'). I just want to talk about clothes and hats and shoes and planes and weapons and caps and girls.
Y'know. Fun stuff. :)

Best Regards.

Speaking of JS-
I noted that Gary Sinese had a leather jacket (maybe suede)
and Fedora in the more recent film adaptation of- 'Of Mice and Men'-
another instance. It was a pretty common getup in those days-
Rich-man, Workman, Sporty, everyguy getup.

Gary Sinese and John Malkovich. Workman and his Tool.
