Which decade is the worst in terms of style?

The past month or so, I've been dabbling into late-1960s looking "Elvis '68 Comeback Special" type sideburns, with the flared bottom and all (mine more slightly than Elvis). So how do the rest of you feel about long sideburns? I think they're cool, and even since four or five years ago, I've been aspiring to grow 'em, even if I couldn't at the time, and not really since half a year ago. I'm 21, and I could not grow "real" sideburns very easily at all, but now it just so happens that I can, and I'm taking advantage of that. I may have to shave them off when applying for a job, so I figure I'll enjoy it while I can.

I know AtomicEraTom's got these going on as well, for the record.

^^The last time I had sideburns was back in '92; had to shave them off when I was called to active duty because of the L.A. Riots. Before that, I wore them at various times, especially when I was between 19-22. I usually wore them just down to the earlobe, and trimmed. I see nothing wrong with wearing them (they can be quite cool) if your face and haircut lend to it, and they're not too flared out; however, if you decide to look more "Golden Age," then I shave 'em off.

I got 'em and I love 'em. They start at my ear lobe and taper/flare toward the corners of my mouth, but not reaching. They're big, but not quite Roy Clark!

Sure will, eventually! I've got them trimmed just a tad, a week ago, so they're not as "shaggy" as they were, maybe another week or two, I'll post. I plan on consistently growing them throughout the summer, maybe even a beard, too. I'm not sure if I'll keep the latter when I get into my university, though, as I want to present what I believe may be a more professional image for me (that's not to say beards can't be professional, but I'm not sure about for me).

"shaggy" :lol: Clean shaven always appears to me more professional however if a beard is neatly trimmed it can look professional....

Well my apologies for disappointing you, but this summer, I might just let it go for a while, until next fall. To be frank, when I get into university, I'm going to want to look and feel more professional, so adjustments will be made where I feel they're appropriate.

Back to the whole decades thing, though... Quite a few of my "style icons" were most famous in the 1960s. Now, I don't care for the garish, multi-colored, psychedelic hippie garb, so I favor the more conservative aspects of that decade's looks. A few of my influences include Sean Connery, Clint Eastwood, and Alain Delon; both on (in part) and off screen. None of them were strangers to wearing suits, but more casually (and casual-wear is where I currently take in most of my inspiration from), they generally all had this in common; they wore dress shirts, polo shirts, and such, but well-fitting ones, unlike the current middle-aged stereotype of a man wearing ill-fitting "business casual." Also, they all had cool hairstyles, whether slicked-back, side-parted, pompadoured, or more of a less-slick look. Ironically, while they weren't necessarily really big on wearing hats, in their films are some of my very favorites.

Well to be honest facial hair on men has never done much for me, Id prefer a clean shaven face

Well, being a child of the 60's, I remember some pretty crazy styles, and I hated most of them, but I think it's worse now with the really sloppy clothes I see a lot of younger people wearing.

I never wore any of that junk, and I hated most of the music, too. My heros were always cowboys as they say, and western clothes have been my uniform all of my life. I have pretty much always worn Wrangers or Levis, but I give up on Levis about 25 years ago and just went with the Wrangers, cowboy or Redwing work boots, double pocket long sleeved western shirts with snaps, and usually topped it off with a cowboy hat or baseball cap.

I have never owned a pair of dress shoes, or a even a Polo shirt, although it seems I do remember owning a pair of bell bottom pants back in the early 70's. I have owned a few suits but not many, and I hardly ever wore one, unless it was a funeral or a wedding.

Western clothes have maybe not been exactly in style, that much in the last 40yrs, but they have never completely went out of style. I have never felt confortable in anything else, but that's just me. I can't even hardly stand to wear a regular button shirt, but that is mostly because they don't usually have double pockets with flaps on them, I have never worn one out without having sew at least one button on. Once in a while a snap will tear up, but it's rare, and they almost always wear the shirt out, before failing, and I have to have those pockets for all of the stuff I carry, like glasses and pens and stuff.

The '80s were pretty hideous, I agree. Having grown up in them, I feel I can safely say that. I don't have any firsthand experience with the '70s, but the fabrics gross me out.

But the '80s....c'mon. Who decided we should look like print-challenged crossing guards? All that neon, and obsession with checkers, preferably paired with polka dots. I still laugh at old school photos, and family pics from back then. The music, on the other hand....

I loved the '90s, but looking back, I have to agree that fashion turned really sloppy. I had my own slob uniform back then, and dressing up was a hippy-esque dress with Docs. Definitely different from my aesthetic nowadays.
