While you were sincere in posting your sign, a very time-tested and successful sales tactic is to get a potential customer to believe something they might want is (1) no longer available, (2) was just sold to someone else, (3) is just about to be sold to someone else, (4) was never intended to be for sale. All variations on a theme (and there are more), but I have repeatedly seen people who were only marginally interested in something become passionate about wanting to buy it when some version of the above happened.

Something in human nature makes people want something more - something they might not even have wanted if it was readily available - if they think they can't have it or might loose the opportunity if they don't act quickly. Again, I know you weren't being tricky, but you accidentally stumbled into a very motivating sales technique.

I removed the sign, “Not for Sale” because I really do not wish to sell my car, and now....

My first car was probably our four-door 1984 Oldsmobile Cutlass, which began as the family car, then went to my brother as his car, and then was passed down to me when he got a 1966 SS Chevelle. I think I got the raw end of the deal on that one!

But a very "kid of the 1980's experience."

Shamu !

’67 VW convertible which I drove for many years when the most complicated thing was worrying
about punching out for 1/2 hr. lunch on the time-clock machine & hurrying back to punch back in time
so as not to be late. I finally figured a way out.

1969 Chevrolet Chevelle Malibu.

Circa 1982. Purchased from the original owner for $800 who got it as present for graduating from UCLA. She had been recently divorced and was going to Oregon State for a Master in something I can't remember. She wanted an econo car instead of her "old boat."

A fantastic car. 255 hp 350 with a Quadrajet, Turbo 400, 12 bolt rear end with 3.31s, vinyl top, bumper guards, two tone trim package. Aside from that, pretty much a base model Malibu. I added the Centerlines. I think I still have the original hubcaps in Dad's shop somewhere...

Note cheesy imitation "bomber jacket," shortly after that I discovered real A-2 jackets and the sickness was on.

The Chevelle was sold for a 1965 GTO and then it was on to a 1970 Barracuda. The Barracuda wasn't half the car the Chevelle was.

Didn't own a car until 1982, nearly a year after I had graduated law school and passed my bar exam. A 1970 Red Ford Torino, similar to this one, at least in appearance. Nicknamed it, "Das Boot," because it was so darn oversized. Finally sold it to buy an engagement ring for my wife.

1997 Ford Escort LX wagon.

Purple.

It was an unusual shade, even for purple. If I met up with another, say at a gas station, the other driver and I would always look or nod and say, "you too, eh?"

On the move again...
My first car was a 1966 Volkswagen bug. Hated that heap. All I wanted to do was set it on fire and pitch it off a cliff. The next person who bought it did the next best thing by wrapping it around a utility pole. She, fortunately was not hurt.
First street motorcycle was a Honda 90cb custom. Loved that bike.

In a way, I wish I still had it.

Cheers!

My first car was a 1950 Chevy Club Coupe. Parents bought it for $200 in '58 for Mom and me to share. It was ugly two tone green and had some rust on the rear wheel arches. A family friend ran a body shop and he repaired the rust and painted it black for another $200 which I worked off by working all summer at the body shop - my first car and my first job all in one neat package. I continued to work at that shop and at a couple others for a few years till I figured out that life as a car painter was not the best way to earn a decent living. I'm sure that had I stayed in that business I'd be long dead by now. Nobody had even heard of respirators then, let alone the full body spacesuits in use now.

This is mine. It's a 1967 Datsun 2000 roadster. I got it in '74. This is the actual car although I confess it hasn't been running in two years. It also spent several years in my dad's garage before being restored.

1958 Chevrolet Biscayne 4 door. Traded it for a 1952 Chevrolet while in Uni. Both thirsty cars for a struggling student during the gas crisis....
