What was the last TV show you watched?

The Durrells in Corfu. PBS. series finale. The one thing I wasn't crazy about this season was how key scenes or situations were skipped from the ending of one episode to the beginning of the next. Those jumps were jarring. Larry. Other than that, as I have probably said a few times by now, this was pure joy and will be missed. Will be watching again. I hope this series got some good attention elsewhere. Did the UK find it as endearing as I did? (I felt the same about Indian Summer)

Poldark. PBS. OK.

Cash Cab. Bravo. I can't remember which station this used to be on, but I enjoyed it then. Glad to see it back. Did this show get cancelled years ago, or did it continue locally in NYC? It almost feels like it never stopped.

Batwoman on the CW. The actors are kinda wooden, but it films in Chicago and I'm pretty satisfied with that much alone.

I'm finding the whole series strange. It's not really like how the comics were. I'm not sure if I'll keep up with it, as it's not really grabbing my attention and I'm not seeing what the critics see in it.

Last thing I watched was the first episode of "His Dark Materials." It was strange at first, but out of a nagging sense of familiarity I looked it up and discovered that it's the HBO take on the novels, which the 2007 film "The Golden Compass" was adapted from. After realizing this, the concepts and lore started becoming much more familiar to me. Looking forward to future episodes.

Also keeping pace with The Mayans, a great second season so far, and we really hope there is at least a third to come.

They've done well, imo, to keep enough commonality with the original show to hold my interest, yet put enough of a different feel to it to keep it fresh. I enjoyed the first season a lot; not sure when we get #2 here. The sole reason why I don't want it to go on forever is because I'm very keen to see the promised prequel series to Sons, centering on the 'First 9'.

Last thing I watched was the first episode of "His Dark Materials." The film was supposed to be the start of a trilogy, but it bombed. I slept through it once on a plane and have never read the books, so can't really comment on them. The BBC show seems popular among people I know who are really big fans of the source material, though.

Last night's The Mayans, which was a brilliant episode, and just after my wife expressed disappointment that we did not get to see the big confrontation (no spoilers), and saying "we'll have to wait for next week", we see the PVR description we'd missed saying "season finale"!

We are gagging for next season, which has been confirmed, though we also just learned Kurt Sutter has been "fired" (how do you fire the creator of a show? You'd think he'd have some "this is my baby, deal with my temper" clause in there, but hey...).

We are also wondering if season two was in fact BETTER than season one? A close call either way, but hot damn what a ride!

If he's been fired, I wonder what implications that holds for the prequel series? Presumably the studio owns the IP in the franchise. And he has a temper? All the makings of a Californian Alan Moore!

The Durrells in Corfu. PBS. If I may, I'd like to gush one more time. The opening animation and music might be my all-time favorite of any TV show. I'm at the point now that I prefer, and greatly appreciate, no opening sequence or music. Flash the title of the show for three seconds, and let's get on with it. But I watched this one every week. They all try to set up the vibe of the show, but this one succeeded perfectly. If you watch that animation and listen to the strings, you know exactly what the show feels like. Just fantastic.

Mayans. I was impressed with this season. While a spin off of SoA, I feel it is smart to limit the crossbreeding. This show is a more evolved, more complex, and more interesting show. SoA tried to get pseudo-philosophical, and I know that pretentiousness is a tempting addition to Mayans. They managed to avoid it for the most part. Thank you. There's an actual story here. The characters are developing. Edward James Olmos lends greatly to the quality of the acting. In short, Mayans is its own being, and it's good that they allowed for that.

As for Sutter...he's not much of a writer. I've said that many times before, so I'll leave it at that. Reminds me of the Vikings creator and writer. Hey, you fellas had a good idea. Or at least an idea the public wants. Now let more talented writers develop the story. Create, and then let others execute that idea. I didn't know Sutter was canned, but now that I know, I'm even more excited for next season. Hopefully, FX will spring for some consultants that know their stuff, and the chosen writers will be more skilled at dialog, character, and story than Sutter was. It wouldn't take much, but it's clear that they're in very short supply in Hollywood.

Started the girls watching The Walking Dead. So funny to go back to season one, and see Melissa McBride and Norman Reedus as after the opening credits "guest stars"! And Daryl, PLEASE go back to the short hair!

Three episodes into season one, girls loving it so far. And early on, they HATE Andrea! Can't understand why. I liked her...

The books were so much better and Larry - Laurence Durrell - friend of Henry Miller and Anais Nin - ended up one of literature's great world figures.

Get Shorty Season Three. I'm enjoying it. It's not brilliant writing, plotting or acting but it's diverting, the performances have vitality and the production has some style.

Away on temporary duty again, watched among other things Our Mutual Friend, the BBC and CBC production from '98. Just a lovely miniseries of one of my favourite Dickens novels.

American Horror Story: 1984. FX. I found this both tedious and impressive. Once again, they managed to commingle all these 80's situations and fads in a surprising way. It wasn't much of a story or "good", but it was one of those deals where you'd find yourself thinking, "Ha! I didn't expect to see that here, but yeah, of course it is." I think I'm giving it more credit than I should, but so it goes. I can see Falchuk and Murphy gathering at one or the other's home and brainstorming facts and whatnot from this year or this style on a dry-erase board. Whatever they've decided to revive from the past. Someone surely does something of the sort, and they do a good job of integrating it all into their seasons without it being a total screw up. They get close, but they never seem to fall into the bad.

The Cry. Sundance. I thought I'd try this because I've never seen Jenna Coleman in anything but Victoria...and Sundance. The subject matter and story didn't grab me, but I'm tempted to try another episode because of a glowing review or two. Probably not, though.

The show was driven by it the political point it wanted to make. Too many cartoon characters (stereotypes) and plot points created to drive home their perspective.

We could not stand Andrea. Actually, there are quite a few characters that we were happy to see go away. Negan’s departure would have kept us viewing the show as we got really tired of him doing the same thing over and over. We lost interest in the show.

We are huge Elba fans, but have not heard of this one. Without spoilers, what is the basic premise? I will always give something a go to see if it is watchable at a minimum.

It is a Netflix offering. Set in 1971 Britain at the height of the Enoch Powell anti immigrant sentiment. It profiles a small group of blacks that engage in actions to stop the legislation and foment revolution. Idris plays an aloof black man that they try to guilt into joining the 'cause'. Interesting premise poorly executed IMHO.

So many things, the wife and I finished the latest Peaky Blinders, and man did that go fast! Absolutely brilliant season, we did not see a minute where we wished it would pick up steam. Possibly the best season since the first.

We have now finished seasons one and two of The Walking Dead with the girls. We are taking a Christmas hiatus for now, and giving them a taste of the "cliffhanger" situation we face each season and half season (as in now, we just saw the "mid-season finale" of the current year.

My brother was watching season four of Mr. Selfridge which I recall being discussed back in the day. Quite intrigued over a couple of episodes, so wanted to start afresh. So, Netflix Canada has season four.

Just season four.

Not season one.

Not season two.

Not season three.

Just season four.

And people ask us why we miss our video store...
