Hi everyone,
I recently picked up a Cal straight zip, and had a few questions. I was wondering if it’s from the 50s or 60s, and whether it was HH or not? I see that all the zippers are Talon, however, I’m not quite sure.

Thanks!

From the grain of the leather I suppose it's steerhide.... Lovely jacket by the way
Thank you! Is there a way to tell the difference between steerhide and horsehide? If so, does the weight play a role? I believe it weighs about 5lbs. Also, the seller stated that it was hh, but I’m pretty new to leather, so I just wanted to make sure haha.

I am not an expert and I do not deal with leather so I might be wrong.... my personal method is to check the grain. I have 3 CALs all in HH and several other jackets both in HH and SH and you can see there is a typical even texture in HH, less "grainy", also in the older jackets. On the contrary, SH usually is quite grainy and less "firm" also in the new ones. But of course it depends also by the part of the animal (FQHH is usually very even) and I guess also by the tanning method used.
