What Jacket Are You Wearing Today?

My main keepers are this one, the cross zip DD, the Vanson T3 and my Grizzly. There are others that I probably won't sell but those 4 are the one's that I like the best.

Don’t get me wrong, I like them all, but I love the DD! You could sell them all keeping this one. You’d be more than fine.

I really like the look of the DD but it's not the best for cold weather. The Lost Worlds from today has a wool lining and closes against the wind very well. The DD has a design issue that prevents the top wind flap from closing up all the way to the neck (there's a snap that's placed too close to the zipper). It's also too trim fitting to wear with a sweater or anything more than a single layer. Finally, it tends to ride up my body when riding which then lets air into the shoulder area causing it to flap a bit. It's a great casual, cool weather jacket but isn't a good 4 season riding jacket. If I didn't ride year round I could see making it my primary jacket though.

I like goatskin! Greatleat her jacket and I like it with the fedora. Light, strong as nails, but I guess doesn't show much patina.
I went to dinner with my daughter and her boyfriend over the holidays wearing my Himel Heron. They commented on how much they liked the jacket so i described my latest obsession. When I mentioned Fedora Lounge, both she and her boyfriend let out loud gasps of horror, and asked me "you aren't going to wear a fedora are you?" Seems it is a fashion faux pas with the millennials.

I dearly hope they meant "You're not going to wear the kind of fedora people buy at Walmart and which makes them look like hipster posers." Have they seen you in a real fedora?

I call this my hybrid-vintage G-1. I say hybrid, because it never served in the military...it was brand new when I bought it. But, except for its mouton collar, its a mil-spec E-series G-1. And I bought it directly from Orchard Motorcycle, who had recently been the government contract manufacturer of issued G-1s.

About eight years ago Orchard was selling these jackets on their web site at very reasonable prices. And though I didn’t like reproduction jackets...nor did I particularly like E-series G-1s...the price was so low I simply couldn’t resist.

When it arrived, I was predictably underwhelmed. Being an E-series jacket, it was cowhide, albeit fairly nice cowhide. And it had a few defects, beginning with its size. It was tagged as a size 52, but its actually a size 48, at most. It was wearable, but I had several vintage size 48 G-1s that were much nicer, so my new cowhide Orchard was immediately relegated to the closet.

Perhaps, in my old age, I’ve become a bit less of a jacket snob. While I’m still only lukewarm about reproduction jackets, I now understand that there are good reasons why some folks prefer them over originals. And I also understand that leather jackets are much like leather boots. The most comfortable ones are the ones that are purchased new and slowly broken in by their owners.

So now I’m wearing the Orchard. It’s a bit large on me...I’m a size 46...but it works well with an under layer. And did I mention that it’s still cowhide? But, when it’s finally broken in, it’ll be my jacket...totally. My wrinkles and creases. My scrapes and scars. My sweat and beer stains.

And a much as I love vintage leather, there’s something to be said for the vintage part being mine...and no one else’s.

That's a great looking fit you have there. Really nice looking jacket! I think the good think about the M422/G-1 design is that it still looks good, even if the jacket measures slightly bigger than you'd normally wear...the high armholes, slim waist and half belt all make it look sleek. The cut has plenty of shape. On the other hand, an A2 that is too big tends to look shapeless and baggy.

My Langlitz Cascade in medium weight cowhide.

My Langlitz medium weight cowhide as well... It's incredible how comfortable this jacket has become. So much so, that I've started wearing it regardless if I'm riding or not.

Well, guilty as charged. Here i am in the Caribbean last summer wearing a plastic hat from walmart all crumpled up, pulled from the bottom of my back pack. Sorry. I'll buy a nice one one from Cuenca next.

Meanwhile decided to go with the tried and true Akubra Stylemaster Hat Color: Carbon Grey Size: 60, for my first Fedora.

Fedora and civi/A-2 repro? My daughter will not be seen with me. I think I may just be a hipster poser.

How tightly are these ordinarily fitted? This one is a 46 and I normally wear between a 38 and 42, depending on the era and cut. Unless this one has been shrunk I think I would have trouble getting into a 42.

Just a simple Levi's Sherpa lined trucker! Picked it up at an outlet mall for next to nothing and I can't stop wearing the damn thing....it's just so easy to wear and surprisingly toasty!
