Real Red lost forever!

They don't seem to make red anymore that doesn't have some type of ugly orange tint to it! Sephora is the only place that carries good red colors you may need to mix pencil with lip gloss to create that cherry poppin red! :p

Any NYX or EyesLipsFace recommendations for cool - toned red lipsticks?
I need a light red, the bright ones easily overpowder my face.

I absolutely love both NYX Chaos, which is blue-based, and NYX Snow White, which is a true crimson. Neither are "light" but can be applied lightly, I suppose.

Anyone else adore NARS Shanghai Express? It's a wonderful shade of red, it doesn't pop and overpower like say red hot red or even russian red but creates this lovely velvety deep color that is great for everyday use. But the consistency is very dry, so I apply it gently with a brush, otherwise it has a tendency to lump. The upside, however, is that it has good staying power.

Totally not true! I can think of no fewer than 3 MAC shades off the top of my head that have no hint of orange in them - they are true, blue-based reds. Chanel also has good, true reds. Actually, there are many brands and many shades of true red lipsticks - just read back in this thread ;-)

Has anyone tried this relatively new Cover Girl Outlast LipStain?

I use this, too. I've gotten lots of compliments, but it took me a while to get the edges nice and clean. I think it's worth the effort as the color really does stay where you put it, no liner needed. I was also having trouble with my lipstick bleeding over and this takes care of that problem. I also agree that you need to exfoliate.

Hi all! I just picked up a new lippy that I had to share. Revlon's new Colorburst lipstick, in Crimson, followed me home the other night (I think I needed cotton balls), and it's my new favorite! It's a warmer red with lots of pigment, and you can't beat the price! Rush out and buy!

I was lucky to find a tube of Max Factor no. 44 as my local grocery store was getting rid of the last of the Max Factor stuff. Also got the matching pencil liner. This is now my favorite red ever.

Leave it to me to fall in love with a lipstick that's hard to come by anymore... I did a search, and the Max Factor Web site, which is kinda neat, shows it. The color is "Ms Right," and it looks like no. 40, which is "Ms Right Now" is a little bluer. Of course, you don't actually buy from the company, and when I got to the window that was supposed to direct me to online retailers with my lipstick, the window came up empty.

So... if anyone comes across any tubes of this loveliness... stock up (or send 'em to me!) ;)

So far, my top two are Revlon's Certainly Red and MAC's Russian Red (both thanks to this thread! lol) It has taken me YEARS to find that 'perfect red', and I think I've finally done it with the Russian Red. Believe me, it's been an expensive uphill battle! :p Next, I'm going to get my hands on a tube of MAC's Dubonnet. Can't wait! XD

Also, I have a question - Can anyone list vintage shades still being produced, besides the Revlon ones? Such as Helena Rubinstein or Elizabeth Arden? Thanks...

found another red lippie in my blog readings: Milani's "A Perfect Red." This is available at CVS drugstores in the U.S. for about $5.50 or so.

It is a color "adjusting" red that is supposed to turn into the "perfect" red for you. I like it on me. Not too shiny, but not drying like my beloved Illamasqua Box or MAC's Russian Red. A good everyday red.

It does leave a pretty fair amount of red stain on my lips, so you may or may not like that. But for $5.50, worth a try if you have a CVS near you.

Ooh, I've not heard of that. I must check that out for myself, thanks! :D

I love NARS' shades but am not always in the mood for the dry texture. The lipsticks did not mix well with my regular lip-balm, at all, but then I bought a beeswax lip-balm and it works great with NARS lipsticks! :)

I've been keeping an eye out for a good, long-lasting lipstick, and when I found a two-for-one deal for Revlon's ColorStay, I figured I'd give their "Top Tomato" shade a try.

Maybe I'm not used to long-lasting lipsticks, but I wasn't very impressed. The *good* is that it's more blue-based than I expected (I thought it would be orangey), but it leaves too harsh a line on the outer edges for my tastes. It's hard to apply evenly, too. It stays on OK, but doesn't really cope well with greasy foods, and likes to wear out from the center.

I think it could be useful for a '20s look, but it wouldn't be my first choice for '30s or '40s. I'm happier with my creamy Revlon "Wine With Everything", layered over a nude lip pencil!

Does anyone know a good red that is kind of sheer or a lip balm? I love the Burt's Bees lip shimmers for summer, but I really need a red. And they really only have pinks and wines. Thanks! :)

I really love the Tarte 24/7 Lip Sheer Balms and they do have two reds (sadly both out of stock at Sephora online but you may find them somewhere else).

I haven't personally tried their red, but I use the "Thursday" color and really like the product.

That's a shame. I really like the "Top Tomato" as does my daughter. The trouble with most long lasting lipsticks is the tendency to wear from the middle. As far as applying evenly, it's one of those practice makes perfect things. I've been wearing them for years and can't wear anything else well because I have a full lower lip and a somewhat prominent chin. If I make a face, I end up with a red strip on my chin! Avoid greasy food (it's bad for you anyway!) and you'll be good to go! That said, if you find something else works for you, stick with it.

Oh, that looks perfect. I'll check it out at the shop. Thanks Inky!

Has anyone checked out the new Sephora shops at JCPenneys? Do they have all the same products?

I'm a huge fan of Clinique's Black Honey Almost Lipstick. It's listed as "raisin," but on me it's a perfect sheer dark red. I'd give my eyeteeth for a lipstick that exact shade that isn't sheer, but I've never found one. It's perfect for daywear.

They are mini-Sephoras. They have a few of the products, but certainly not everything. Actually Sephora in the US are mini-Sephoras compared to the ones in Paris that I visited.

As for red lipsticks, I noticed that I am not really into matte. So I bought Red Revival from Maybelline and I like that shade. My makeup fairy bought me a Revlon matte in Really Red and I like that shade too, but I still ended up putting lip balm over it.

I tried to save money by trying the new Revlon mattes, but... the Really Red was too orange for my tastes (flattering, but not as red as I'd hoped)... and the In the Red looked great for daytime, but too brown at night... so I ended up going to MAC to get my perfect (Russian) Red. If I'd just gone there in the first place, I could've saved a lot of money. lol Fortunately, I was able to clean up my slightly used Revlons and gave them to a pair of my best girlfriends, on whom they are more suited, IMO. All in all, they were good and ended up not being a total waste... I'm just extremely picky. lol
