My ideal is to start with a nice straight crown, then add a simple center crease with a well defined front pinch.

The hat in my avatar is an example of how I like my hats to look.

My favorite crease, but it requires a tall crown.

That hat is one of those I made on a 1550 directional block. We found this set of blocks in New York a while back and I have made 6 hats on them so far, 2 for myself. I really like the way they come out.

On an all weather hat, like a cowboy hat with a tall enough crown, I am ok with the cattleman's crease, as it sheds water in the rain, really well, where a Teardrop crown will hold water, but the style now for a lot of those hats is a low crown and a cattleman's crease. Those I have to change, as the cattleman's crease takes up more hight then a nice Teardrop, or sometimes I go with a Gus Crease on Western's.

My Fedora's are all Teardrop, so far, however I have a Black Cowboy Conversion, with a tall crown and went with a teardrop wth a lot rake, and found that it looked maybe too tall, for some reason, so I lowered it some and now it has very little rake, but I don't Know, I may try again on it. Maybe I will try the center bash with pinch points on it.

I'm still experimenting with different styles and colors (and having fun too!) but I'm definitely loving my low crown stingy brim porkpie and diamond crease hats. I tend to like the center dent with front pinches with a 3 inch brim. The only bash that I typically don't like, I don't know the name of - it's the type that the new Stetson Open Roads have with a top center den tand a long parallel dent in each side (not just front pinches but length of the crown on each side). Is there a web page out there with pics showing each basic bash and its name?

That's the cattleman. Others will post one or another chart for you.

Fedora: Center Dent, ,medium pinch... because it just works for me.
Western: Center Dent, forward slope, aka 'Montana Slope' aka "Gus". Nothing extremely, just a easy downward slope from back to front. Why? Because it is different.

Mr. Jwalls, that hat is unique! Would you mind describing a 1550 directional block? I guess I'm asking what it looks like. Thank you.

El Sid,
The block is taller on the back than the front. When a diamond or 'C' crease is put in the hat it is very square. Looks very Early 30's style.

My favorite's the teardrop crease. Two of my felt hats (and one wool) have them, and it's the one that I think looks the best on me. I don't really go for the tall crowned look, at least not more than 4 1/2 inches. A teardrop comfortably resting on my head in terms of size, and being at 4 to 4 1/4 inches is my ideal. I think the cattleman's crease is cool though, there is something undeniably western about it that I enjoy, which may or may not be a reason some of you dislike it. My Open Road has it, but it's modern.
