View attachment 260792 Here’s a Dalton I’ve had for a while and finally, yesterday, able to dye midnight blue. I’ve yet to sew the ribbon on and the original sweatband and liner back in. (I dyed a Mallory the day before)
That’s the original binding with 4 decorative stitching rows. It was 7 1/8 but stretched to 1/4 and able to keep the brim width, being careful also to keep it 2 9/16 all the way ‘round.
Not easy, but doable. Dye job a success, I’d say! It was a medium/dark gray.
I used one packet of navy blue and 1/4 packet of black. In natural light it’s a bit lighter blue, but not much. I love it, and glad it came out this well. It’s my only Dalton!

I also have to add Bickmore hat stiffener and then reshape.
Now, what type of bow treatment to use...?

Here’s a pic of the hat on the block. View attachment 260791
Was going to sell this when it was gray, I have too many, but now since it’s my only blue hat... make room for another favorite. :)
Y'all have a great weekend!

That's a great color. Good job. I'd go with 5 or 7 simple gills to suit that brim binding.

Splendid job on that Dalton! I've been reading very mixed results from members here on their attemps dyeing a hat themselves, but you've succeeded by the looks of it. How did you do it?

A nice trifecta yourself, Stefan. I really like the sharp contrast on the Wormser.

Rit dye and Rit color stay in two gallons of water using Vinegar and salt, to taste, and cooked to Medium hot in a large pot. Let it soak for 24 hours...making sure there are no wrinkles in the felt, so there won’t be folds not getting dye.
It helps to use colors that are compatible. This hat was a medium gray, which suits a blue dye.
Nothing to it.
The hard part is getting over the fear of ruining a good vintage hat...and becoming capable of sewing it all back together with some success.
And to all out there who don’t like rare hats to be messed with: I understand your cares. I truly do. But, I also think if the hat isn’t ruined by doing untraditional, unrespectable things to a good hat...and in fact, turns out better, then I’m okay with it. Hope you can be, too.
Though, mistakes can be made, by anyone, sometimes.
As long as mistakes are done on my own hats, I can live with an occasional faux paw. The trick is to be able to come up with a fix to mend the paw. :)

Somehow forgot to thank you for the compliments, Stefan and Jonathan @TheOldFashioned.
I’ve been working like a mad man today on 4 hats. Gotta get ‘em done before next week when I start a new house addition.

As a side statement:
Magically, just now stretched a dense, dress weight size 7 Champ over a 7 3/8 block without losing ANY crown height or brim width. Now, please tell me how that happened, so I’ll know how to do it again, ‘cause that’s not how it’s supposed to go. And it was fairly easy, too? Maybe I’m delirious.
Has that ever happened with those of you here who’ve blocked smaller hats?

My Panama for errands yesterday (no head shot) before I donned my ‘roo leather for yakiniku (Japanese style bbq). When the coals died down a bit, I smoked me some habaneros.

Today it was ‘roo again for a bit of DIY and weeding. Wore my Knox raffia with my summer Jedi suit for an after dinner walk.

Also dried the habaneros a bit more. They smell amazing!

Dog soirée in a Warren fedora this morning. This Warren in my eyes has a more formal appearance. The felt color for certain, but the pouncing is satiny smooth. A charcoal hat should be called a fedora me-thinks. I find it hard to call to call a more formal fedora a "hat" or heavans a "lid." Crazy reflections on a misty and cool dog soirée morning.

I've always hated the "lid" analogy too & never use it myself.

The first cool, crisp fall-like morning calls for the first black hat of the season, a 1900's - 1910's Stetson Boss Raw Edge with Fray sweat/red bow.
