It's an oddball. I'd guess early 50s. It's in remarkably good condition. Some of the softest, warmest felt I've ever come across. I'm honestly not sure how to even begin to describe it.
The production tag has a name written in pencil. So I'm guessing it was made special for someone. Also interesting, there's a loose size tag under the liner that says 7 1/2, but the production tag has 7 1/4 written, which it definitely is. No date to be found.
It also came with a Wormser box the seller claimed was original. Initially I bought the hat because I thought I was getting a wormser. Definitely not disappointed though.

Thank you for posting the Wien Museum exhibition catalog. Did they exhibit any pre WWII Austrian Velour Men's Soft Felt Dress Hats? I did a quick scan through the catalog but I didn't see any mention. Pre WWII Hand Wet Brushed Austrian Velours were prized throughout the World.

There was actually an "Old Hat Maker Workshop" at the "Technisches Museum Wien" financed by Peter Habig who was the founder P. & C. Habig Wien but very sadly it didn't survive a 1992 renovation of the museum.

I noticed the link I posted for the catalogue is only a preview showing the first part, there is a lot more to it. There were about 100 "hats" in all, that number also included women's hats, religious head coverings, a few baseball caps etc., many of which were loans from other collections. I can't remember a pre WWII velour soft felt dress hat, but I may be mistaken... There was a nice older velour alpine hat... OK, I would have to check the catalogue again, which by now lives in the local art college library here. Sorry for being of little help right now. I had to squeeze in the Wien Museum, was in Vienna on other business primarily, but couldn't justify not going to the hat exhibit while I was in town.

I'd heard that the museum has a collection of about 1400 hats hiding in their vaults, which is partly why I was a little bit disappointed with the selection on show. I would also liked to have seen the inside of some of the hats, but the focus was on social history, not on the production details - although there was a bit on Viennese hat making.

Such a shame about the old hat maker workshop not being there anymore to see, that would have been a real treat. It's sad that there are only Mühlbauer and Szaszi left in Vienna manufacturing hats as far as I know. Still hoping for a resurgence, but the bare headed people outstrip the hat wearers, even at an exhibition about hats in Vienna...

Wonderful hat Daniele. Is it usual to have contrasting ribbons or does it indicate that one of the ribbons has been replaced? Yesterday there were a lot of hats with contrasting ribbon on this thread!

Red, I regret to say I encounter no hats, either of this caliber or of any other caliber... quite depressing...

On a fairly cold day like today I'm alway surprised at the number of bare heads I see around town. There were a few people wearing oversized socks on their heads - sorry, "beanies" - but apart from that I only counted 4 flat caps and 3 fedoras (2 clearly cheap wool felt, 1 fur felt) out and about. Don't these balding men get cold heads in winter? And the only woman I saw wearing a proper hat was my mother when I met her for coffee... So it's great to come back home to such a variety of great hats worn today right here!

Awesome hat kuki! Is it red or orange? I especially love the bow, so cute - I know, I get way too excited about hat bows. Great photos!

Yes it's too bad they didn't focus more on production but I doubt they have anyone that knows much about the past history or cares to look into it in detail.

The German Hat Musuem in Lindenberg, Germany (Mayser Hats is headquartered there) is more production oriented so probably worth taking a look at if you are ever in the area.

Your point about not being able to see the inside of the hats is a big problem for people like us that collect and wear hats. Luckily the hat museum at the Gotisches Haus (Gothic House) Hat Museum, Bad Homburg vor der Höhe, Germany allowed me to go through the men's hats in their archives and also photo document the hats. I was also able to look through their library and photo documents of interest. This museum has been a great resource to me. I still have a back log of documents I need to post on my website.

I also visited the hat museum at the Nový Jičín (was Neutitschein, Austria prior to WWI) City Museum in Moravia, Czechia (this was Austrian Velour center with JHS (now TONAK), AP and BB). They have about 6000 hats in their archives which I wasn't able to see but the curator gave me many great photos which are posted on my website. Since my visit they opened an additional museum that is dedicated to the production of hats.

Collins Salzburg - Wien made hats up until around 2010. There is still production information on their website. Their hat maker worked at P. & C. Habig Wien and supposedly they have some of the old P. & C. Habig hat forms. I have no idea if they still have all this equipment / machines.
