Wore my Sea Spray straw today. Whenever I wear it, i find my head sweats MUCH more than sans hat. Is it because the straw is bad? Doesn't seem to be doing much cooling! View attachment 125706 View attachment 125707 View attachment 125708

Sea Spray owner here.

The Sea Spray provides perfect protection from the suns rays and stays on in a sea breeze. The stiffer straw and tight weave as features. I wear mine through mid 80's. I do carry a cotton handkerchief that I use to wipe my brow and bald head. I do take t off when inside and use a napkin or tissue to wipe off any perspiration.

BTW: Somewhere in the archived threads is a disscusion had a few years ago about vents providing ventilation. No solid evidence was agreed upon. I like the look, so I vote have more vents. Does it work - not noticeable in my experience.

I agree with Scotty that hot and humid days ask for a lighter weave and lighter straw fibers with even some ventilation. No hat is perfect for all situations - thank goodness many folks on the forum are prepared for 100+ different occasions with hats!

Pulled out one of my favorite felts today, my Gannon natural custom. It just says so much about what I really love about a fedora.

Absolutely perfect hat... that’s why I had Michael make me one almost exactly like it. In fact, there’s at least one more on the Lounge. You were an inspiration to us.

Oh yeah, I think FedOregon was the first to own such a hat ;)

I think that is the best looking Gannon he has ever made.

I know Michael has made at least 3 of these. He told me if he had enough of the vintage ribbon he used on these, he'd make it a regular offering on his website.

I'm just so thrilled how well it turned out. I saw something similar on the BSHW FB page only with a green crown ribbon. The natural felt is so incredibly versatile, has an incredible hand... it looks almost like a microscopic fiber heather to me. Just awesome. I was thinking of another natural made up with a lighter - to - medium blue ribbon.

Have to agree with you on the ventilation thing. I love the design, but i fail to notice any effect. Was Sea Spray a well-known budget hat brand in its day? Have not seen any info on the maker.

I may have to opt for a straw lid with a looser weave, so I'm not sweating bullets in the horrible New England heat. Cheers to those who answered my inquiry.

I’ll be looking for that hat with the blue ribbon...as you know, I’m not above stealing others’ hat ideas. I shamelessly copied another hat when I commissioned the Phoenix Hat Company @humanshoes to make another hat in Winchester’s natural beaver; it is a fabulous color.

My $5.95 Marathon today. I paid a bit more than that but it still has the price tag. I can't quite decide brim up or down but that may change by the day. I'm also not really sure about the thin band width and very tempted to put an 1-1/4"ish one on. It's lasted this way for a very long time and it seems almost wrong to change it. Brim down for this one I think. Just add to your collection with a hat with a wider ribbon, then you have the best of both worlds.

Sadly, no top hat in my arsenal.

Now and early lunch and off for some fun.
Have a good one,

Well, if you are going all the way formal like this, at least the derby. It would look cool with a topper though.

Today it’s Borsalino, somewhat unusual with a back bow, 3 stitch overwelt in Cromo, a rich dark forrest green in 2 1/8” brim. I’m not much for back bows, stingy brims or green, but if you throw em all together you get a pretty ok hat.
Be well. Bowen
I'm a sucker for a back bow hat, add to this one that killer brim stitching and color. Trifecta! And...um Borsalino, Duh!

Not all straws are cooling. This is a perfect choice for a sunny spring day, it is so beautiful and tightly woven. Look up some more open weaves like a Semi-Colado style, you will see how they let your head breathe. This is one killer straw my young friend! Don't give up on it yet.

Yes Doug and I have one of them. I had tried to contact you to see if you minded me copying yours. I hope you don’t mind but I totally ripped off your design.

Mine has a 6” crown and 3” brim.
