Just days before Huggy Bear miraculously arrived at my house, I threw a very low bid at this Kevin McAndrew vicuna colored velour Grousemoor. Surprisingly (or maybe not so surprisingly given the lack o' love for such headwear), I won at $14.

Today, this funky, feathered felt accompanied my son and I for a leisurely hike through a local wildlife conservation area.

You know I have been a member of a few forums about different topics but I must say that the response in this forum which I see towards each other is very positive. Thank you for your replies to my first couple of posts. I feel these vintage fedora hats hearken back to a time where a certain decorum existed between people. Sure there were problems, sure there was injustices just like today; but their was a certain "spice'' that existed that has been lost. There was a certain mystery. The excitement about what existed behind the hat; behind the clothes; was more powerful than what exists today when all is exposed and therfor has lost its essence; its strength.

Two things can put a smile on your face while doing what we do best around here......a bright colored muck fork and a good hat Told the wife I could barely walk. She told me I could walk slow and handed me my gloves and coat Must have been wearing my hat around the house in my pajamas that got her all fussy.

Way to come out of the gate, Will! Yes, looks like 1950s, early 60s Canadian Whippet. Wolthausen had the license for Canadian Stetsons at that time. I was getting ready to say "it's really not a Whippet" because it didn't say it on the liner. 1950s US Whippets were on the liner; the very old ones have it on the sweatband. This, however, is definitely a 1950s+ hat. As far as cleaning, start with a good brushing or vacuuming, then brush with steam (do NOT get the steam near the sweatband). Only if it's really dirty or stained would I recommend a naphtha bath.

Canadian Fashion Connection – Stetson

As an integral element of the lone cowboy – the Stetson hat is a symbol of America – but a large part of its history played out in Canada.

In 1902 the Union Hat Works of St. John’s, Quebec agreed to relocate their factory to Brockville, Ontario in a deal that exchanged a free parcel of land and ten tax-free years for a fully equipped factory that guaranteed to employ 100 local workers for four years.

The Union Hat Works operated until 1913 when it was purchased by the Wolthausen Hat Corporation of South Norwalk, Connecticut. The J.B. Stetson Company acquired a controlling interest in the Wolthausen Hat Corp. in 1930 and took over the Brockville factory in 1935 so they could avoid high Canadian tariffs by manufacturing their hats for the Canadian market in Canada. It was the first time Stetson had opened an operation outside of the U.S., but plants in Mexico and Australia soon followed.

Stetson also made women’s hats, starting in 1932

The Brockville Stetson plant made a variety of hats, particularly fine dress hats under their Sovereign and Royal Stetson lines, as well as youthfully-styled hats for their Playboy line. Stetson also produced all the hats for the Royal Canadian Mounted Police at the Brockville plant.

Between 1955 and 1970, the men’s hat business shrunk by 50% and Stetson closed their Brockville plant on May 21st, 1970. The plant president at the time, Alex Higginson, explained “It is no mystery why we are closing the plant, just take a walk down the street and you’ll see the answer- most people just aren’t wearing hats any more”. Although production in Canada ceased, Stetson retained a Canadian office until 1985.

This one is really cool Matt. I do believe the same species of fowl must have given their own for both hats. You wear it well.
