Well I purchased my first hat 2 weeks ago and it was a wool felt pork pie. I started reading about hats on this site and I became aware that fur felt and vintage are generally better quality hats. I saw a hat on an online buy and sell site. It was an hour and a half drive away but I decided to drive there. It seems that I take a 7 3/8 size and this one was listed as 7 1/2.

I arrived there a few mins ago and didn't even try it on before purchase. I just tried it on now for these pics.

It turns out to have a box it was sold in in the early 1950s. It is a biltmore Canada box but inside the box is a grey Stetson Whippet I believe.

Now my big question is how to clean it.

It needs a cleaning in the ribbon and the hat looks like it needs a little cleaning.

However inside that hat is really clean with no staining.

Any suggestions?

Will

Good looking hat in a hard to find size. I’m not sure it’s a Whippet, but I’ll leave that for others as I’m no expert. In any case, it’s quite the score.

For cleaning, first try vacuuming with a drapery attachment and then a good brushing. If it still needs more you can either look at some of the DIY threads here (the first time you dunk a vintage hat in Camp fuel you’ll be a bit freaked out) or you can send it off. Lots of people can clean your hat and make any needed repairs. I’ve sent several out to VS but I think my first call today would be to @humanshoes if he can’t do it he might be able to point you in the right direction. Good luck and welcome to the addiction.

Thanks Red.

Thanks Stefan. They are a nice hat. I don't remember, off the top of my head, seeing you wear it before.

A super bunch of hats again Stefan. You find some real beauties.

Thanks Red. I think this Panizza will turn out to be pretty versatile. And I like this green color a lot to start with.

Thanks all,
Michael
Thanks, Michael. Your memory is correct: I have not posted any pictures of me wearing that Stetson (I had to look that up).

Hi Red.

Thanks for the message. Attached are pics of the inner leather band. I did not know Stetson Made hats in Canada in the 50s but this is what it says.

Whippet you said and Whippet it is. I told you I wasn’t an expert. Vintage Whippets in that size are rare! If you see any in 7 5/8.... :)

Hey folks!
Yesterday was non-stop rain. Spent most of the day indoors. I wore this Dobbs West briefly to make a run to the pharmacy. I'm wearing it again today to dry it out.

Welcome to the flock! :)
Looks great. These birds have some beautiful felt.
Lovely looking Dobbs, John. And I'm well pleased that the gamebird flapped its wings over to me; it's an incredible hat!
