Some of my favorites

"So in Love" is frquently in my head:

Strange, dear, but true, dear,
When I'm close to you, dear,
The stars fill the sky,
So in love with you am I.
Even without you
My arms fold about you.
You know, darling why,
So in love with you am I.
In love with the night mysterious
The night when you first were there.
In love with my joy delirious
When I knew that you might care.
So taunt me and hurt me,
Deceive me, desert me,
I'm yours 'til I die,
So in love,
So in love,
So in love with you, my love, am I.

So taunt me and hurt me,
Deceive me, desert me,
I'm yours 'til I die,
So in love,
So in love,
So in love with you, my love, am I.

I love the tune for "Goodbye, Little Dream, Goodbye":

Goodbye, little dream, goodbye,
You made my romance sublime,
Now it's time to fly,
For the stars have fled from heavens,
The moon's deserted the hill,
And the sultry breeze that sang in the trees
Is suddenly strangely still.

It's done little dream it's done,
So bid me a fond farewell,
We both had our fun.

Was it Romeo or Juliet who said
When about to die,
"Love is not all peaches and cream",
Little dream, goodbye.

As you might tell, Im a HUGE Cole Porter fan.
I also love "Can't Take My Eyes Off of You":

You're just too good to be true.
Can't take my eyes off you.
You'd be like Heaven to touch.
I wanna hold you so much.
At long last love has arrived
And I thank God I'm alive.
You're just too good to be true.
Can't take my eyes off you.

Pardon the way that I stare.
There's nothing else to compare.
The sight of you leaves me weak.
There are no words left to speak,
But if you feel like I feel,
Please let me know that it's real.
You're just too good to be true.
Can't take my eyes off you.

I love you, baby,
And if it's quite alright,
I need you, baby,
To warm a lonely night.
I love you, baby.
Trust in me when I say:
Oh, pretty baby,
Don't bring me down, I pray.
Oh, pretty baby, now that I found you, stay
And let me love you, baby.
Let me love you.

You're just too good to be true.
Can't take my eyes off you.
You'd be like Heaven to touch.
I wanna hold you so much.
At long last love has arrived
And I thank God I'm alive.
You're just too good to be true.
Can't take my eyes off you.

I love you, baby,
And if it's quite alright,
I need you, baby,
To warm a lonely night.
I love you, baby.
Trust in me when I say:
Oh, pretty baby,
Don't bring me down, I pray.
Oh, pretty baby, now that I found you, stay..

They just don't write like this anymore. The words had such feeling. Now-a-days it's all fluff and no dog.

The Starlit Hour

Love here in the starlit hour
Oh, heaven is in your eyes
While the wind is sobbing
Underneath the stars
Both our hearts are throbbing
Like two guitars

Love here in the starlit hour
Night whispering lullabies
Let me dream forever
Underneath the silvery skies

Will it be just as sweet again,
The glamor, the glory that we know
Will I find when we meet again
The glamour, the glory’s still aglow

But tonight let us forget tomorrow
Here under the midnight blue
Love will bloom and flower
In the starlit hour with you...

I have always thought that the lyrics to Goody Goody were rather amusing:

So you met someone who set you back on your heels, goody goody!
So you met someone and now you know how it feels, goody goody!
Well you gave her your heart too, just as I gave mine to you
And she broke it in little pieces, now how do you do?

So you lie awake just singing the blues all night, goody goody!
And you found that loves a barrel of dynamite!
Hurray and halleluiah, you had it comin to ya
Goody goody for her!
Goody goody for me!
And I hope you're satisfied you rascal you!

Dixon Cannon said:
I know a ditty nutty as a fruitcake
Goofy as a goon and silly as a loon
Some call it pretty, others call it crazy
But they all sing this tune:

Mairzy doats and dozy doats and liddle lamzy divey
A kiddley divey too, wouldn't you?
Yes! Mairzy doats and dozy doats and liddle lamzy divey
A kiddley divey too, wouldn't you?

If the words sound queer and funny to your ear, a little bit jumbled and jivey
Sing "Mares eat oats and does eat oats and little lambs eat ivy"

Oh! Mairzy doats and dozy doats and liddle lamzy divey
A kiddley divey too, wouldn't you-oo?
A kiddley divey too, wouldn't you?

Aww, that brought a little tear to my eye, I haven't heard that in years, my mom used to sing it to me when I was little .. some great memories of her, my sister, and myself singing it together on road trips!

She also used to sing ..

Three Little Fishies (Itty Bitty Pool)

Sung by Kay Kyser (#1 in 1939)
Words and music by Saxie Dowell

Down in the meadow in a little bitty pool
Swam three little fishies and a mama fishie too
"Swim" said the mama fishie, "Swim if you can"
And they swam and they swam all over the dam
Boop boop dit-tem dat-tem what-tem Chu!
Boop boop dit-tem dat-tem what-tem Chu!
Boop boop dit-tem dat-tem what-tem Chu!
And they swam and they swam all over the dam

"Stop" said the mama fishie, "or you will get lost"
The three little fishies didn't wanna be bossed
The three little fishies went off on a spree
And they swam and they swam right out to the sea
Boop boop dit-tem dat-tem what-tem Chu!
Boop boop dit-tem dat-tem what-tem Chu!
Boop boop dit-tem dat-tem what-tem Chu!
And they swam and they swam right out to the sea

"Whee!" yelled the little fishies, "Here's a lot of fun
We'll swim in the sea till the day is done"
They swam and they swam, and it was a lark
Till all of a sudden they saw a shark!
Boop boop dit-tem dat-tem what-tem Chu!
Boop boop dit-tem dat-tem what-tem Chu!
Boop boop dit-tem dat-tem what-tem Chu!
Till all of a sudden they saw a shark!

"Help!" cried the little fishies, "Gee! look at all the whales!"
And quick as they could, they turned on their tails
And back to the pool in the meadow they swam
And they swam and they swam back over the dam
Boop boop dit-tem dat-tem what-tem Chu!
Boop boop dit-tem dat-tem what-tem Chu!
Boop boop dit-tem dat-tem what-tem Chu!
And they swam and they swam back over the dam.

I CAN DREAM, CAN'T I?

I CAN DREAM, CAN'T I?
The Andrews Sisters

- words by Irving Kahal, music by Sammy Fain
- introduced in the 1938 musical "Right This Way" by a singer known
as Tamara. This was the same musical that featured "I'll Be Seeing You"
which went on to become a World War II standard.
- lyrics as recorded July 15, 1949 by The Andrews Sisters with Gordon Jenkins
and His Orchestra. Lead vocal by Patty Andrews with Maxene and Laverne on
backup vocals.

(dream on, dream on)

I can see
No matter how near you'll be
You'll never belong to me
But I can dream, can't I?
Can't I pretend that I'm locked in the bend of your embrace?
For dreams are just like wine
And I am drunk with mine

I'm aware
My heart is a sad affair
There's much disillusion there
But I can dream, can't I?
Can't I adore you
Although we are oceans apart?
I can't make you open your heart
But I can dream, can't I?

I'm aware
My heart is a sad affair
There's much disillusion there
But I can dream, can't I?
Can't I adore you
Although we are oceans apart?
I can't make you open your heart
But I can dream, can't I?

(dream on, dream on, dream on)

That's easy: "What'll I Do" by Irving Berlin

It's such a simple song, but the simplicity is the key to the feeling of hopelessness the song conveys to me.

"Gone is the romance that was so divine.
tis broken and cannot be mended.
You must go your way,
And I must go mine.
But now that our love dreams have ended...

Whatll I do
When you are far away
And I am blue
Whatll I do?

Whatll I do?
When I am wondring who
Is kissing you
Whatll I do?

Whatll I do with just a photograph
To tell my troubles to?

When Im alone
With only dreams of you
That wont come true
Whatll I do?

Whatll I do with just a photograph
To tell my troubles to?

When Im alone
With only dreams of you
That wont come true
Whatll I do?"

For some reason, I've always (well, since my last reconstruction, anyway) wanted to serenade a pretty girl with The Righteous Brothers' "You've Lost That Lovin' Feeling"... with a bar full of enthusiastic fighter-pilot backup. (I'm pretty sure that if I can find the girl, one of my old profs can get some of his old 318th FIS buddies to do the backup at a reunion sometime...lol )

You never close your eyes anymore when I kiss your lips.
And there's no tenderness like before in your fingertips.
You're trying hard not to show it, (baby).
But baby, baby I know it...

You've lost that lovin' feeling,
Whoa, that lovin' feeling,
You've lost that lovin' feeling,
Now it's gone...gone...gone...wooooooh.

Now there's no welcome look in your eyes
when I reach for you.
And now your're starting to critisize little things I do.
It makes me just feel like crying, (baby).
'Cause baby, something in you is dying.

You lost that lovin' feeling,
Whoa, that lovin' feeling,
You've lost that lovin' feeling,
Now it's gone...gone...gone...woooooah

Baby, baby, I get down on my knees for you.

If you would only love me like you used to do, yeah.

We had a love...a love...a love you don't find everyday.

So don't...don't...don't...don't let it slip away.

Baby (baby), baby (baby),
I beg of you please...please,
I need your love (I need your love),
I need your love (I need your love),
So bring it on back (So bring it on back),
Bring it on back (so bring it on back).

Bring back that lovin' feeling,
Whoa, that lovin' feeling
Bring back that lovin' feeling,
'Cause it's gone...gone...gone,
and I can't go on,
noooo...

Bring back that lovin' feeling,
Whoa, that lovin' feeling
Bring back that lovin' feeling,
'Cause it's gone...gone...

You Go To My Head

You go to my head
And you linger like a haunting refrain
And I find you spinning 'round in my brain
Like the bubbles in a glass of champagne

You go to my head
Like a sip of sparkling burgundy brew
And I find the very mention of you
Like the kicker in a julep or two

The thrill of thought, that you might give thought
to my plea, casts a spell over me
So I say to myself, get a hold of your self, can't you see
It never can be

You go to my head
With a smile that makes my temperature rise
Like a summer with a thousand July's
You intoxicate my soul with your eyes

But I'm certain that this heart of mine
Hasn't a ghost of a chance in this crazy romance

You go to my head.

And what about this one

In the still of the night,
As I gaze from my window
As the moon in it's flight,
My thoughts all stray to you.

.............

"Do you love me as I love you?
Are you my life-to-be, my dream come true?"
Or will this dream of mine
Fade out of sight
Like the moon
Growing dim
On the rim
Of the hill
In the chill,
Still
Of the night?

I'll Build a Stairway to Paradise, by Irving Berlin

All you preachers
Who delight in panning the dancing teachers,
Let me tell you there are a lot of features
Of the dance that carry you through
The gates of Hea-ven.

It's madness
To be always sitting around in sadness,
When you could be learning the steps of gladness.
You'll be happy when you can do
Just six or seven;

Begin to day!
You'll find it nice,
The quickest way to paradise.
When you practise,
Here's the thing to know,
Simply say as you go...

I'll build a stairway to Paradise
With a new step ev'ry day !
I'm gonna get there at any price;
Stand aside, I'm on my way !
I've got the blues
And up above it's so fair.
Shoes ! Go on and carry me there !
I'll build a stairway to Paradise
With a new step ev'ry day.

Ev'ry new step
Helps a bit ; but any old kind of two step,
Does as well. It don't matter what step you step,
If you work it into your soul
You'll get to Heaven.
Get bu-sy ;
Dance with Maud the countess, or just plain Lizzy:
Dance until you're blue in the face and dizzy.
When you've learn'd to dance in your sleep
You're sure to win out.

In time you'll get Saint Vitus dance,
Which beats the latest thing from France.
Take no chances on this Paradise ;
Let me give you advice.

I adore all the old songs!

Ich hatt' einen Kameraden (rough translation)

http://www.early1900s.org/moscow/Kameraden.mp3

In battle he was my comrade,
None better I have had.
The drum called us to fight,
He always on my right,
: In step, through good and bad. :

A bullet it flew towards us,
For him or meant for me?
His life from mine it tore,
At my feet a piece of gore,
: As if a part of me. :

His hand reached up to hold mine.
I must re-load my gun.
"My friend, I cannot ease your pain,
In life eternal we’ll meet again,
: And walk once more as one." :

I love the Andrews Sisters

Andrews Sisters Lyrics
verse:
I wrote my mother, I wrote my father,
And now I'm writing you too.
I'm sure of mother, I'm sure of father,
And now I want to be sure of you.

chorus:

Don't sit under the apple tree with anyone else but me,
Anyone else but me, anyone else but me, NO NO NO!
Don't sit under the apple tree with anyone else but me
Till I come marching home.
Don't go walking down lovers' lane with anyone else but me,
Anyone else but me, anyone else but me,
Don't go walking down lovers' lane with anyone else but me
Till I come marching home.
I just got word from a guy who heard
From the guy next door to me,
That a girl he met just loves to pet,
And it fits you to a "T".
So don't sit under the apple tree with anyone else but me
Till I come marching home.

(Last time, last two lines)

Then we'll go arm in arm, and
Sit down under the apple tree,
Baby, just you and me,
When I come marching home.
PARODY, GIRL'S REPLY

(sung by Marion Hutton with Glenn Miller Orch.)

Don't give out with those lips of yours
To anyone else but me,
Anyone else but me, anyone else but me, No No NO!
Lots of girls on the foreign shores,
You'll have to report to me
When you come marching home.
Don't hold anyone on your knee,
You better be true to me,
You better be true to me, you better be true to me.
Don't hold anyone on your knee,
You're getting the third degree
When you come marching home.
You're on your own where there is no phone,
And I can't keep tab on you.
Be fair to me, I'll guarantee
This is one thing that I'll do:
I won't sit under the apple tree with anyone else but you
Till you come marching home.
I know the apple tree is reserved for you and me,
And I'll be true till you come marching home.

I dedicate this Ralph Freed/Frederick Hollander vintage gem
to all "the beautiful ladies of the FL"!!:whistling

You leave me breathless
You heavenly thing
You look so wonderful
You're like a breath of spring

You leave me speechless
I'm just like the birds
I'm filled with melody
But at a loss for words

That little grin of yours
That funny chin of yours
There's so much to my heart

Or give your lips to me
For darling that would be
The final touch to my heart

You leave me breathless
That's all I can say
I can't say more because
You take my breath away

I'll Walk Alone

I'll walk alone because, to tell you the truth, I'll be lonely
I don't mind being lonely
When my heart tells me you are lonely, too

I'll walk alone, they'll ask me why and I'll tell them I'd rather
There are dreams I must gather
Dreams we fashioned the night you held me tight

I'll always be near you wherever you are each night
In every prayer
If you call I'll hear you, no matter how far
Just close your eyes and I'll be there

Please walk alone and send your love and your kisses to guide me
Till you're walking beside me, I'll walk alone

I'll always be near you wherever you are each night
In every prayer
If you call I'll hear you, no matter how far
Just close your eyes and I'll be there

Please walk alone and send your love and your kisses to guide me
Till you're walking beside me, I'll walk alone
I'll walk alone

I Walk the Line

"I Walk the Line" Johnny Cash

I keep a close watch on this heart of mine
I keep my eyes wide open all the time
I keep the ends out for the tie that binds
Because you're mine, I walk the line

I find it very, very easy to be true
I find myself alone when each day is through
Yes, I'll admit that I'm a fool for you
Because you're mine, I walk the line

As sure as night is dark and day is light
I keep you on my mind both day and night
And happiness I've known proves that it's right
Because you're mine, I walk the line

You've got a way to keep me on your side
You give me cause for love that I can't hide
For you I know I'd even try to turn the tide
Because you're mine, I walk the line

I keep a close watch on this heart of mine
I keep my eyes wide open all the time
I keep the ends out for the tie that binds
Because you're mine, I walk the line

Angelicious, "Is You Is Or ..." is one of my favorites, too. I mostly know it from Louis Jordan's version. Tom the Cat did a good cover of in Tom and Jerry also!
My favorite line is "seems my flame in your heart done gone out".
Jordan's "Choo Choo Ch'Boogie" and "Saturday Night Fish Fry" are reet as well. Plus, way before "Baby's Got Back" Jordan sang "I Like 'Em Fat Like That" : "She's a whole heap of honey and ain't she sweet"
"Early in the Mornin'" also great;covered by Harry Nilsson later on.

The Wolf
My favorite is "What's the Use in Getting Sober (When You're Gonna Get Drunk Again) ..."shut up boy":cheers1:

I've always been fond of Comden and Green's Just in Time, particularly sung by Judy Garland

Just in time
I found you just in time
Before you came, my time
Was running low,
I was lost,
The losing dice were tossed,
My bridges all were crossed
Nowhere to go,
Now you're here
And now I know just where I'm going
No more doubt or fear
I found my way
For love came just in time
I found you just in time
And changed my lonely life and lucky day

Remind Me by Dorothy Fields--Ella Fitzgerald's version slays me

Turn off that charm,
I'm through with love for a while,
I'm through ... and yet,
You have a fabulous smile,
So if I forget ..........

Remind me, not to find you so attractive .....
Remind me, that the world is full of men...
When I start to miss you...
To touch your hand, to kiss you...
Remind me, to count to ten...

I had a feeling when I met you...
You'd drive me crazy if I let you...
But all my efforts to forget you...
Remind me I'm in love again...

I kept my heart well in hand and I'm certain
That I can take you or leave you alone
Then you begin that beguine again
And boom I give in again
I have a will made of steel my friend
But when it seems about to bend

Remind me, not to mention that I love you
Remind me, to be sorry that we met ....
Although I adore you
Remind me to ignore you.
You're one thing I will regret

So when your charm begins to blind me,
I'll simply tie my hands behind me,
Don't let me kiss you, please remind me,
Unless, my darling, you forget

There's a Judy Garland song called "Nothing But You" that I love too but I'm not sure who wrote it.

When you walk into the room then the room is light
When you say anything then what you say is right
If that is due to my singular condition
Well, then that condition is my one ambition
I'm in love with you

I woke up from a dream one day and there was nothing but you
I looked into my heart that day and there was nothing but you
You were there so there was love
Brave and bright and new
When I look into life I see past and future too
Nothing there but you

You were there so there was love
Brave and bright and new
When I look into life I see past and future too
Nothing there but you

Rafter, achhh you made me sniffle! I'm so sorry for your loss.
You've got me in a quandry now as I can't remember the tune!!!!

My fave (apart from 'The way you look tonight') is this: Steve Conway did the best version...

I wish I didn't love you so,
My love for you,
Should've ended long ago.

I wish I didn't need your kiss,
Why must your kiss,
Torture me as long as this?

(chorus)
I might be smiling by now,
With some new, tender friend,
Smiling by now,
With my heart on the mend.

But when I try,
Something in my heart says,"No!",
You're still there,
I wish I didn't love you so.

I love this song too--KD Lang did a great version
