I've never heard that version of Sunny Side Of The Street before.
It was great!!! Thanks for posting Cousin Hepcat. :)
Cool :)

You probably do, but incase, if you don't have much Dorsey, here's the best / most representative compilation of his currently on Amazon; a CD re-release of a 70's 2-LP reissue set, "This Is Tommy Dorsey, vol. 1" - His truly Greatest original 30s-40s recordings. (Dorsey & Ellington are my faves of the era; Dorsey did what's to me the most representative track of the whole Swing Era, "Opus One")

That looks interesting CH !!! :) I do tend to gravitate towards the 1930s when it comes to music so the CD that I got some months ago is called 'The Dorsey Brothers - Stop, Look and Listen - Original 1932-1935 Recordings'. My favorite tune from that one and one of their hottest numbers is 'Tailspin'. It was co-written by Jimmy Dorsey and Frankie Trumbauer (who also recorded it with Paul Whiteman) :D But it has no lyrics....;)

"As Time Goes By"
music and words by Herman Hupfeld

[This day and age we're living in
Gives cause for apprehension
With speed and new invention
And things like fourth dimension.

Yet we get a trifle weary
With Mr. Einstein's theory.
So we must get down to earth at times
Relax relieve the tension

And no matter what the progress
Or what may yet be proved
The simple facts of life are such
They cannot be removed.]

You must remember this
A kiss is just a kiss, a sigh is just a sigh.
The fundamental things apply
As time goes by.

And when two lovers woo
They still say, "I love you."
On that you can rely
No matter what the future brings
As time goes by.

Moonlight and love songs
Never out of date.
Hearts full of passion
Jealousy and hate.
Woman needs man
And man must have his mate
That no one can deny.

It's still the same old story
A fight for love and glory
A case of do or die.
The world will always welcome lovers
As time goes by.

Oh yes, the world will always welcome lovers
As time goes by.

My Dad used to sing this one:

I know a ditty nutty as a fruitcake
Goofy as a goon and silly as a loon
Some call it pretty, others call it crazy
But they all sing this tune:

Mairzy doats and dozy doats and liddle lamzy divey
A kiddley divey too, wouldn't you?
Yes! Mairzy doats and dozy doats and liddle lamzy divey
A kiddley divey too, wouldn't you?

If the words sound queer and funny to your ear, a little bit jumbled and jivey
Sing "Mares eat oats and does eat oats and little lambs eat ivy"

Oh! Mairzy doats and dozy doats and liddle lamzy divey
A kiddley divey too, wouldn't you-oo?
A kiddley divey too, wouldn't you?

This has been running in my head for a while now. "BLUE SKIES"

Blue Skies (Irving Berlin)

I was blue, just as blue as I could be
Evry day was a cloudy day for me
Then good luck came a-knocking at my door
Skies were gray but theyre not gray anymore

Blue skies
Smiling at me
Nothing but blue skies
Do I see

Bluebirds
Singing a song
Nothing but bluebirds
All day long

Never saw the sun shining so bright
Never saw things going so right
Noticing the days hurrying by
When youre in love, my how they fly

Blue days
All of them gone
Nothing but blue skies
From now on

[2]
I should care if the wind blows east or west
I should fret if the worst looks like the best
I should mind if they say it cant be true
I should smile, thats exactly what I do

for sweet n' sappy...

IF YOU WERE MINE

Johnny mercer / matty malneck

If you were mine
I could be a ruler of kings
And if you were mine
I could do such wonderful things
I’d say to a star
Stop where you are
Light up my lover’s way
And every star above you
Would obey, say
If you were mine
I would live for your love alone
To kneel at your shrine
I would give up all that I own
Yes even my heart
Even my life
I’d trade it all for you
And think I was lucky too
If you were mine

and then..

SING YOU SINNERS

All you sinners drop everything
Everything
Let the melody and the harmony ring
Let it ring
Lift arms up to Heaven and sing
Ring-a-ding
Sing you sinners woncha sway n' swing
What a thing

Start with clappin' y'hands all about
All about
Don't be silent - Let the Lord hear y'shout
Shout it out
And jus' let the music come out
Of yr snout
Sing you sinners woncha sway n' swing
Check it out
(Dig the drift of what I mean)

In a world where there's no music
(Old Scratch)
Satan gets his kicks
(He's up to his tricks)
He'll be laughing up and down the banks
(Hee, hee, hee)
Of that river Styx

You're so wicked baby, and you're depraved
You can rave
It's apparent that you have misbehaved
To your grave
But if you should wanna be saved
Jus' behave
Take a listen now to the bird...

Stop all that chewin' yer cud - and all that standin' in the mud there
Swing people! Swing every chortle from yer mortal portal
I dig that everyone believes that all cattle prodigies
Are like a sneeze
Hard blowin'-missin one lick of blowin' talent to show

(If y'sing - y' gotta swing!)

But remember that the day will come when you
Will be just steak on a plate
(Folks, y'know it's fate)
So dig the music of the swing-o-sphere -
(before your swing arrives too late)

That's a little too dark
Still, it's true - we've got breath for such a limited time
What are ya, stupid, ya cows?? - you'd think to sing was a crime

In defense now; hence now; Here's comes Adele McCluck:

Mrs. Mockingbird, I must say you haven't heard
The friendly bellowing swing of our friends the cows -
As they shed their way from Teagarden to Fuller
Instead of spendin' ev'ry day jus' sneakin' around
To life another lick -
These cats work on their cow-tone, so when they get up to blow
They blow a fatter bone-tone into the ozone

(And furthermore...)

You tweety-birds are always singin' away
Never givin' up thought of what you say
We cows do - shedding takes up most of our day
So when we start and settle in to play - we can say
A moo is an array of what we've always known to be
The best and only way to play

(What we mean to say is...)

Before the band will letcha sing
(Sing with Fletcher Henderson)
You've got to get y'self to swing
(Like the Bean or Satch)
So your horn can blow - a single note or two
Of deeper thinking
(That's the way to swing)
So set your mind upon a tone
(When you're shedding all alone)
And you will have a cornerstone
(Like the bass trombone)
Blow your horn and take a bow
So that you're swinging like the cows
Pythagoras would be so proud of us

SORRY THIS POST IS SO LONG..IT IS WHAT IT IS.:)

"Home": This one always provokes a bittersweet tear out of me

When shadows fall and trees whisper day is ending,
My thoughts are ever wending Home.
When crickets call, my heart is forever yearning,
Once more to be returning Home.
When the hills conceal the setting sun,
Stars begin a peeping one by one.
Night covers all and, though fortune may forsake me,
Sweet dreams will ever take me Home.

"Neglected girls shouldn't worry, that's what God made sailors for!"

Ok, so its reeeally old, slightly suggestive, and I don't condone cheating, but I do love the hysterical lyrics and adore singing it:

Sophie Tucker

If Your Kisses Can't Hold the Man You Love

"Every time that I hear a woman cry
'Cause her man has left her flat
I just feel like saying
"Don't be such a fool, you fool."

Better dry your eyes
Can't you realize
You gain nothing by that
Well that's no way to keep his heart warm baby
When his love grows cool

What's the use in sighing
What's the use in crying
If he's wandered off the track

'Cause if your kisses won't hold The man you love
then your tears won't bring him back, no
Might as well be cheerful
No use being tearful
If he's given you the sack
'Cause if your kisses won't hold the man you love
Then your tears won't bring him back

Now, listen, if sweet, sugar kissin'
Isn't gonna make him come home
Tell me how do you hope to keep him to you
With tears instead of song

Just be a normal fella
Come on, say "what the hella"
Get his clothes and help him to pack

'Cause if your kisses won't hold the man you love
Then your tears won't bring him back

Love is like home cooking-- good and wholesome
But all men need some mutton on the outside now and then lol
If you find your boy's been cheating, then do the same old dear,
He's only giving you the chance that you've been waiting for for years
My goodness, tears won't get you anything!
Just a shiny, red nose
Go on, paint that powder on,
Put on your swellest clothes
Then you'll get them by the score
Neglected girls shouldn't worry
That's what God made sailors for ;)

Don't cry for him or chase him
Just screw it and replace him
With some good looking Tom, Dick, or Jack
'Cause if your kisses won't hold the man you love
Then your tears won't bring him back"

The Streets of Laredo
arranged & adapted by Arlo Guthrie

As I walked out in the streets of Laredo
As I walked out in Laredo one day
I spied a poor cowboy wrapped up in white linen
All wrapped in white linen as cold as the clay

"I see by your outfit that you are a cowboy"
These words he did say as I proudly stepped by
"Come sit down beside me and hear my sad story
I'm shot in the breast and I know I must die

"'Twas once in the saddle I used to go ridin'
Once in the saddle I used to go gay
First lead to drinkin', and then to card-playing
I'm shot in the breast and I'm dying today

"Let six jolly cowboys come carry my coffin
Let six pretty gals come to carry my pall
Throw bunches of roses all over my coffin
Throw roses to deaden the clods as they fall

"Oh, beat the drum slowly, and play the fife lowly
And play the dead march as you carry me along
Take me to the green valley and lay the earth o'er me
For I'm a poor cowboy and I know I've done wrong"

We beat the drum slowly and played the fife lowly
And bitterly wept as we carried him along
For we all loved our comrade, so brave, young and handsome
We all loved our comrade although he done wrong

The saddest song I ever heard was sung by my grandmother, the only song I ever heard her sing.

Tall, shy, auburn-haired, she stood at the kitchen sink many a morning, face lifted to the window light like a farm girl on the prairie, her attention caught by some melody from afar. She slowly pulled breakfast dishes from the sudsy water, passed them back and forth beneath the running faucet, then placed them in the draining tray.

I stood behind her in the corner of the kitchen, watching silently.

And she began to sing:

Some of these days.
You’re gonna miss me, honey.
Some of these days,
You’re gonna feel so lonely…

You’re gonna miss my hugging,
You’ll miss my kissing, too.
Some of these days,
You’re gonna be so blue…

What heavy heart she carried with her on those wings of song, I cannot say. But one thing I know for sure: She never saw the boy in the corner, with tears streaming down his cheeks. She now probably does see the man in his office, with tears streaming down his cheeks.
Saddly she is gone, just two weeks, this Saturday.

I'm so sorry Rafter. Please accept my deepest sympathies on your loss.
I wish I had something more eloquent to offer, but I don't.
I'm sorry. My heart hurts for you.

The Coffee Song

Writer(s): lyrics: bob hilliard/music: dick miles

Way down among brazilians
Coffee beans grow by the billions
So theyve got to find those extra cups to fill
Theyve got an awful lot of coffee in brazil

You cant get cherry soda
cause theyve got to fill that quota
And the way things are Ill bet they never will
Theyve got a zillion tons of coffee in brazil

No tea or tomato juice
Youll see no potato juice
The planters down in santos all say no no no

The politicians daughter
Was accused of drinking water
And was fined a great big fifty dollar bill
Theyve got an awful lot of coffee in brazil

You date a girl and find out later
She smells just like a percolator
Her perfume was made right on the grill
Why they could percolate the ocean in brazil

And when their ham and eggs need savor
Coffee ketchup gives em flavor
Coffee pickles way outsell the dill
Why they put coffee in the coffee in brazil

So your lead to the local color
Serving coffee with a cruller
Dunking doesnt take a lot of skill
Theyve got an awful lot of coffee in brazil

"I get a Kick Out of You"

Verse:

My story is much to sad to be told
But practically everything leaves me totally cold
The only exception I know is the case
When I'm out on a quiet spree, fighting vainly the old ennui
Then I suddenly turn and see
Your fabulous face

Chorus:

I get no kick from champagne
Mere alcohol doesn't thrill me at all
So tell me why should it be true
That I get a kick out of you

Some, they may go for Cocaine
I'm sure that if I took even one sniff
It would bore me terrifically too
But I get a kick out of you

( Some like the bop-type refrain )
( I'm sure that if, I heard even one riff )
( It would bore me terrifically too )
( But I get a kick out of you )

( Some they may go for cocaine )
( I'm sure that if, I took even one sniff )
( It would bore me terrifically too )
( But I get a kick out of you )

I get a kick every time I see you standing there before me
I get a kick though it's clear to see, you obviously do not adore me

I get no kick in a plane
Flying too high with some gal in the sky
Is my idea of nothing to do
But I get a kick out of you

After You've Gone

I love crooning this one:

After you've gone and left me crying
After you've gone there's no denying
You'll feel blue you'll feel sad
You'll miss the dearest pal you've ever had
There'll come a time don't forget it
There'll come a time when you'll regret it
Some day when you'll grow lonely
Your heart will break like mine
And you'll want me only
After you've gone after you've gone
Away

Rafter, achhh you made me sniffle! I'm so sorry for your loss.
You've got me in a quandry now as I can't remember the tune!!!!

My fave (apart from 'The way you look tonight') is this: Steve Conway did the best version...

I wish I didn't love you so,
My love for you,
Should've ended long ago.

I wish I didn't need your kiss,
Why must your kiss,
Torture me as long as this?

(chorus)
I might be smiling by now,
With some new, tender friend,
Smiling by now,
With my heart on the mend.

But when I try,
Something in my heart says,"No!",
You're still there,
I wish I didn't love you so.

Miss Kitty,

I'd would like to "lighten up" this thread a bit,

So Kitty it's rather funny you mention the song... "I Wish I Didn't Love You So". The multi-talented Betty Hutton is famous for that song here in the States. She passed on about the same time as my grandmother. Hutton was always the very a "feisty and spirited" gal, not unlike my gran.

Romantic Ballads were not the typical Hutton faire..
She was known more for her "novelty" songs with a bang....
such as "His Rocking Horse Ran Away".

annieheadforimagemiddle_33.jpg

Here's Johnny Burke's lyrics to that song.......

I must sit down for a minute, I'm ready to fall in a heap
Willie's been fed and I've tucked him in bed, thank goodness the darling's asleep
He's a wonderful boy and a joy and a boon
Ahh, gee, you should have seen him this afternoon

Bang went the bridge lamp, down went the table, crash went the china tray
But he said "I couldn't help it, my rocking horse ran away!"
Rip rip went the curtain, wham went the window, crunch went the new buffet
And I heard him tell his daddy "My rocking horse ran away"

Somehow Indians got into our front room
Our cowboy grabbed for his gun and went boom, boom, boom, boom, boom

Slam went the screen door, smash went the mirror, looks like I'll soon be gray
But he smiles and what's the difference and maybe some Mother's Day
I'll remember when his rocking horse ran away

Got up early this morning, wore a flimsy negligee
Had to hurry to fix the breakfast and get daddy on his way
Figured I could get the paper, so the neighbors wouldn't see
So I sneaked out on the porch, very, very quietly
Wham went the dish pan, then came a holler, up went the neighbor's shade
It was Mother's little darling, out on a commando raid

Came home late from a picture. I was tired, my shoes were tight
Took off my stockings, dropped my girdle
Got undressed and pulled the light. boy!
Slipped into my night gown, then tiptoed across the floor
Better have a look at Junior, so I peeked into his door
Clang, clang, clang went a cowbell, whee went a whistle, I nearly had a stroke
It was mother's precious baby, just havin' his little joke

Always just when I'm breathin' a peaceful sigh
There's G-Men, coppers and robbers and hi-yo silver!
Bam went the book case, boot went the fruit bowl, boom went the glass bouquet
But he smiles and what's the difference and maybe some mother's day
I'll remember when, bang went the lamp, down went the table
Crash went the tray, rip rip went the curtain, wham went a window
Clang went a bell, whee went a whistle, bam went a pan, slam went a door
On that eventful day, when his rocking horse ran away

I may be influenced by the terrific Glenn Miller arrangement of this song, but what the heck:

Serenade In Blue

When I hear that Serenade in blue
I'm somewhere in another world, alone with you
Sharing all the joys we used to know
Many moons ago

Once again your face comes back to me
Just like the theme of some forgotten melody
In the album of my memory
Serenade in blue

It seems like only yesterday
The small cafe, a crowded floor
And as we danced the night away
I hear you say forever more
And then the song became a sigh
Forever more became goodbye
Cause you remianed in my heart, but

Tell me darling in there still a spark?
Or only lonely ashes of the flame we knew
Should I go on whistling in the dark,
Serenade in blue

Ahhhh . . . . and dancing with your honey . . . sweet.
