Oh! Like a moleskin? How were Spencer to deal with? Expensive?

I could well be wrong, but I have a half-remembered notion that one of the Sheridans had a pair of cords made by them - was it them young Compton-Bassett won a made to measure pair from at one of the parties in the last couple of years?

It was Robert (I can't recall his surname) who won them. He put a note on the Sheridan web forum that he was very pleased with them. I have been using Spencers now for about 15 years. All my trousers (apart from suits and a couple by Bookster) are from them. They are about £100 per pair but are very quick (sometimes a pair ordered over the telephone will be delivered within one week) and are open to discussions on design. I believe they hold patterns going back to the 1920s so can basically accomodate any designs. It is worth emailing them or calling (speak to Alan, I think). If you have a vintage pair they will copy them and keep the pattern on file. As far as I am aware, they don't charge to make the pattern from your trousers (at least they didn't when I first used them). They accomodate odd ideas, such as the time I called them to ask them to use the upper style of my shorts to make a pair of trousers. They turned out great. Another time I had them take one of my patterns to make a pair of plus-twos.
I would always recommend them.

Evans - aka Compton-Basset, that's the one. Yeah, I remember him being very pleased with those now (I'm not on the Sheridan forum. Tried lurking but never quite found it easily navigable). Spencers sound good, I'll hit them on my list of folks to peruse.... Thanks.

MERRY CHRISTMAS 2011 everyone!!

photo taken yesterday evening (December 17, 2011), in the lobby of the Scottish Rite Temple in Oakland, CA

The event was the Gaskell Christmas Ball, I call this photo the 'Christmas Card pose'

I'm channeling 1869-1871 here. I sewed all the pieces of my creamy white (a colour I call buttercream frosting) and purple silk dupioni multi-piece ensemble, working on it for the last month. The only vintage part of it (other than my Edwardian eyeglasses) are the 14 post-war mother of pearl buttons that came from (then) occupied Japan, that adorn the bodice front, and an ostrich feather that came off of one of my vintage 1940s hats that I put on the feather hair clip.

Haven't been on FL lately, as sewing this ensemble took me about a month.

Bad cell phone photos. Much clearer ones coming soon.

Last night at the Cicada Club. 1937 tuxedo with grosgrain lapels, 1930s double-breasted evening waistcoat in grosgrain, 1930s German evening shirt with detachable wing collar, 1930s bow tie (which looks smaller in the photo than it actually is).

:):):) Marc, you ARE the standard bearer for vintage dress, especially formal wear. Well done.

The ensemble is like a scene from that great movie, "Lust Caution." All dressed up for the Peace Hotel (The former Central & then Palace Hotel in Shanghai), to walk in the footsteps of George Bernard Shaw, Charlie Chaplin and Noel Coward. Great look..!
