What Hat Are You Working On Today?

Akubra hats are fun to learn with. Check to see that this hat ever had a liner, as many of them do not, being rugged, outdoorsy types instead of dress hats. I have even lined and reshaped some of their outdoor hats into more dressy ones, as the felt is easy to work with once you get a feel for it.
The information is somewhat limited on this model as I have to assume it’s out of production and not on the Akubra site. The photos I did find appears that most of the Dallas model had a liner. If I pull the trigger I may try to source a liner and new band if the shaping goes well. I believe I can pick it up inexpensive and believe a good experiment.

I am considering buying this Akubra Dallas and would like to try my hand at reshaping it. I have limited experience using a steamer, it appears to be missing the liner as well . Based on the pics and condition , I wonder if is this an endeavor worth pursuing?

I’ve shaped a dozen or so Akubras and their fur felt is not as yielding as other brands but they are not impossible to change. Note that even with steam you will likely have crease lines from the existing crease so be aware of that if you are planning on raising the crown. Based on your name, I’m sure you already know this, but be careful not to damage the leather sweatband or hatband with steam.

Thanks for the information. Haha, I guess I do like leather being as I am either wearing it, working with it or looking for it. I do have one Akubra Adventurer that I really like.

Here is a western weight FEPSA rabbit felt with the 'grizzly' finish. Just waiting for some new brim curlers with a bigger slot to accommodate the monster thick felt. It will be finished off with a Montana Peak bash on the 6" open crown

I have a great liner guy on Etsy, is you like funky liners. He's great.

Got busy knocking some ebay off a couple new hats lol the first is the wool western... got the funky shovel shaped creases out, timmed about 1/4" off the brim to clean up some worn edges, and pretty much got the brim flattened.... will soon be working on a brim curl for this one.

The other is the nice little Stetson 3x... Nice straight taller crown. 2-5/8" bound brim and 5-1/4" crown. Got it mostly cleaned but still need to work on a couple more spots. The brim is tamed and its pretty much wearable now... so far so good! It will most likely be my coffee hat tomorrow morning.
