4X Miller of Denver. 3 3/8 inch brim, 6 1/2 inch open crown. I've posted this hat on New Hats and Waiting For threads but this seems like best home. I suspect this is a 40's or earlier hat? Has no oilskin behind sweatband and never had oilskin or plastic liner cover. Looks like the gold color has largely been worn off the sweatband logo. They did that for the photos. Getting a photo taken was a BIG deal back in the day. Everyone wanted to be seen, not look like some yokel with their face hidden. No one ever wore a hat on horseback (past a sombrero and even the Gringos were Sombreros different and father down on their head) with the hat on the back of their head. Hat wouldn't be there long if they did.

Most that need a hat and wear the hat to keep the sun off their head, and sun out of their eyes. Come on guys.

Those are my thought as well. I would assume that anyone who regularly wears a western style hat these days for protection against the elements, wears it differently depending on the circumstances. In a high wind I pull mine down tight, when the sun is low in front of me I'll tip the brim down, when I'm at the bar or talking to someone outside I'll automatically tip it back a bit to open my face up to the other person, etc.

The point you make about photos back then is a good one, similarly, it's easy to misinterpret old posed photos without understanding the customs of the day, such as sitters never smiling for the camera, as an example.

Stetson mystery hat just arrived. 4 inch brim, 6 3/4 open crown. I was guessing it was Nutria, but definitely isn't, I'd say. Perhaps 3X Beaver, but not sure. No original sweatband. Felt is quite thick and soft. Felt is extremely malleable and lacks any "memory" of previous shaping. Dates sometime in the 40's to early 1950's. I just put a Gus crease in it for kicks, not because it seemed to have had one previously. The Block Number on this hat is # 406. On the Stetson Block Number thread, this block number is listed as being for a hat with a 7 inch crown, so my measurement of 6 3/4 inches, while accurate, may mean this hat has shrunk a bit from an original 7 inch crown. Stetson's Carlsbad model hat was 4 inches by 7 inches in the 1937 Stockman-Farmer catalog.

Not the real deal, but while in England thought I'd take a punt on these Western hatbands.

I received three new hats today, and two were straw. Despite the weather, I’m wearing this Northwest custom pure beaver around and I don’t want to take it off. Mike at Northwest makes a fantastic firm felt modern western hat.

That's a sharp hat, Brent, very nice! I particularly like the color. It looks to me like it has some brown in it, like the older Winchester granite color had, instead of the pure gray/charcoal color that the new granite felt has. Does it actually have a brown component, or is it maybe the green background causing it to look like that?

Probably a moot point, as I guess Ukrainian felt is not available any longer?

Thanks, Regan. It does have some brown tones, but like a lot of felt it seems to shift based on lighting and background.

The availability of the Ukrainian felt is just like the other sources in that you never know when it will be in stock. I think you’re as likely to find it in stock as you are its competition.

A Stetson Number 1 Quality hat made for Stockman Farmer of Denver. This hat is for sale on eBay right now. Maybe a 30's or 40's hat. An extra hatband has been slipped on top of the original one.

Pilgrim Western, 3 1/2 inch brim, 5 3/4 inch open crown. I'm guessing it's a 50's or 60's hat and also guessing that Resistol made it, but not sure. Has Bronco rider liner. Feels like a beaver hat, although not marked as such. After being cleaned, I think it will be a pretty decent hat for the $80 price.
