Don’t see anything that dates this one. Cropped & changed the exposure to look more vintage.
Polaroid exposures are typically not as sharp.

Thanks for the edit, Jack.

You’re right, but they’re always a little grainy even on more close up subjects too. Fun little novelty since we use the old sx70 that always brings a smile to first timers.

Stetson's Boss of the Plains (and a 3 or 3.5" brim) always gets a lot of credit for actual pre 1890's vintage cowboy hats. Not often you see so many big brimmed hats in an old photo. Many of the hats in the photo look like they could 4" and up to me.

Wasn't the BOP made with a 4" brim and crown ? These sure look like them in the photo - many of the photos I've seen from this era have a majority of the men sporting similar hats, the Boss of the Plains apparently dominated at least until the mid 1880s.

Here's some Montana cowboys, circa 1890s. A transformation in the look of the Cowboy hat. Notice the curled brims and the tall creased crowns. A much different looking hat from the BOP that was popular among cowboys just a decade or so before.

Also, notice the jeans. Looks they're being worn the same way a lot of guys wear them now.

I know it borders on blasphemy, but I’ve never cared for the Boss of the Plains. The hats in your photo here, now those are styles I love and would like to have a few of each.

I know it could be just for the photos, but I also see a big difference in how the hats were worn. In the earlier photo, the men wore their hats pushed up high on their foreheads or even higher and above their hairline. Not only do I like the style of the 1890s hats, I also prefer how they are worn.

I wonder sometimes if people didn't adjust their hats for the posed photos, tipping them back to expose their faces better. I have noticed that different eras and regions do tend to show different ways of men wearing their hats, I'm sure fashions changed regularly through the years and from place to place, as they do now.

If you’ve never spent much time in WY & MT, the wind blows yr around; hot in the summer & cold in the winter. Much the same for NM. The air space under a tall crown served as insulation just like the attic space in your house. During a break or downtime a working cowboy might push his hat back to cool his face & forehead but he couldn’t wear it in the wind like that. And he certainly couldn’t wear his hat 3 inches above his ears & keep it on.

I have to agree. The hat styles in that photo are my personal favorites too. I like the curled brims and those tall creased crowns and the way they're worn. Although some guys can really rock the BOP. It's all a matter of personal preference with everyone. The BOP was perfect for Kurt Russell, and Kevin Costner really rocked the Open Range hat.

Come to think of it, I wear this hat all the time when I'm doing yard work and I do find myself pushing it back off my forehead when I start getting too hot.

I know it was common for stills and later those in movies/TV to wear them back to show the person’s face better. This 1880s photo looks extreme. I suspect they did wear their hats differently.

I see a lot of people wearing westerns down to their ears and even so low the hat pushes their ears down and out. It looks very odd to me, but maybe it’s to help them stay on in wind? I’ve had a few people comment that I’m not wearing my hats low enough and some even suggested the hats don’t fit me as I wear them higher than what they are used to. I think it’s a matter of region, usage, and personal preferences.

D Bar J 5X hat. 4 inch brim, 6 inch open crown. I hardly ever buy newer hats, but I'm quite pleased with this hat, especially since it was only a fraction of whatever the original price was.

Miller of Denver 4X hat just received. 3 1/2 inch brim, 5 1/2 inch open crown. Guessing a 1940's hat? Very nice, soft thick felt. There's never been any oilskin or plastic liner cover. However, there IS oilskin behind the sweatband. This might be a clue that this hat is later (?) than my other 4X Miller (see next page). Note that sweatband says Leak-proof and Sweat-proof. These words were used as advertising hype in the 1939-1940 catalog, per attached photo, where some of the hats shown happen to be 4X hats like mine, whether by coincidence or not . Perhaps this indicates this hat isn't 1950's but closer to 1940? Stetson made hats with oilskin behind sweatband by 1941 etc.
